Netflix is in development of a new series adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Dolly Alderton, known for her memoir Everything I Know About Love, has been commissioned as the writer for this project.
The series is still in an unpicked-up state, and it has yet to be officially given the greenlight and no actors are attached to appear in the show so far. It would be Netflix's second attempt to bring the eternal works of Austen to life.
With Netflix ruling the roost in the Regency-romance genre with its Bridgerton series, Pride and Prejudice is likely to be the next one lined up in queue.
Dolly Alderton’s vision for Pride and Prejudice
A celebrated author and screenwriter, Dolly Alderton, will probably find her unique voice for this classic Austen novel. As Variety noticed, Alderton was picked to lead the project due to the success of Everything I Know About Love, a memoir for which the BBC recently premiered an adaptation last year.
Highly acclaimed for her accessible, lively, and emotive writing style, Alderton's Pride and Prejudice adaptation will be eagerly awaiting its readers. This 1813-sourced material had been adapted far more times than anyone could ever care to remember. The last most visible, mouth-watering example was the 2005 film featuring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
However, viewers want to see how Alderton's modern take on the story will compare with past productions. According to Harper's Bazaar, the show is still in development. To date, no release date and no cast confirmation have been made from the streaming service, and it is still possible that it will never materialize.
According to Deadline, any other potential contender whose name will be connected with the role of Elizabeth Bennet is Daisy Edgar-Jones, who was featured in Normal People. Although her reps deny that any casting decisions have been made, fans will no doubt be thrilled.
How this new Pride and Prejudice series fits into Netflix’s Regency lineup
Ever since the success of Netflix's Regency-era romance based on the books by Julia Quinn, it has positioned itself to make its own name in the business world with Bridgerton. While Bridgerton is now being shot for its fourth season, it has shown that period dramas do draw in audiences.
If the series is ordered, a follow-up to Netflix's earlier go at Austen adaptations will ensue, which appeared in the form of Persuasion in 2022. Persuasion only received mixed reviews, with some viewers knocking down the modernization of Austen's characters, but the platform is interested in the timeless stories Austen has to offer for new audiences.
Another new contender in the landscape of Austen adaptations comes in the form of The Other Bennet Sister, which is already in production with the BBC. This new take on the world of Pride and Prejudice will zero in on Mary Bennet, often called Elizabeth's not-as-well-loved sister.
As Variety noted last September 2024, this show will draw on the knowledge of Doctor Who producer Russell Davies (Bad Wolf), for a unique British take on the Austen universe.
If confirmed, the new Pride and Prejudice series would be released on Netflix.
Viewers can always go back to revisit the old adaptations like the Keira Knightley version of 2005 or the Colin Firth one from 1995 by the BBC.
