“Pretty stupid”: The White Lotus Season 3 fans are infuriated due to a major plot hole in the finale

HBO's The White Lotus Season 3 finale ended with many character deaths, Rick and Chelsea's being the most tragic. The couple died in a crazy shootout initiated by Rick just moments after they were reunited on the beach in a dreamy montage.

While the couple's death was truly tragic and impacted the viewers, they could not wrap their heads around Rick's stupidity, which put them there in the first place.

In The White Lotus Season 3 penultimate episode, Rick confronts Jim Hollinger (who he believes killed his father) at his home, who is also the co-owner of the titular resort. With Frank's help, Rick enters Jim's house and roughs him up, even threatening to kill him, but hurriedly leaves, and goes back where? To the hotel of the man he just assaulted.

Fans are furious over why Rick would go back to the resort after roughing Jim up, knowing that he owns it. An X user, @brittrosenthal, even calls him stupid for doing this:

Rick's stupidity leads to his actual confrontation with Jim, who turns out to be his father. But it was too late as he had already shot him, which eventually led to his and Chelsea's death.

Hate him or love him, Rick in The White Lotus Season 3, was just wrongly motivated. In a parallel universe, Rick confronts Jim and leaves with Chelsea on the 'first boat', without discovering that he is his father. But that's not what happened. Rick and Chelsea both met their tragic deaths moments after he discovered that the man he just fatally shot was his father.

While Rick's revenge arc in The White Lotus Season 3 was getting a bit monotonous, the surprise revelation (although Reddit fans had speculated this before) that Jim Hollinger is Rick's father added a twist.

But still, fans cannot wrap their head around why Rick returned to the titular resort in The White Lotus Season 3 finale, which is clear by many of these reactions, and as Reddit user u/Accurate-Cress-8903, pointed out:

''...why tf Rick went back to the hotel after roughing up its owner''

And user, u/SophieSilvers13, followed suit:

''Why the heck would Rick go back to the hotel after threatening the freaking owner??''

One Reddit user, u/Any_Difficulty_3818, even had a hilarious explanation on why Rick returned to the hotel, because the breakfast buffet was just too good to be missed:

Another thing that bothers the fans is that Rick's character is out of line for doing something like this. While his story was becoming monotonous, he was a cunning man who orchestrated the whole meeting at Sritala's house with Frank. So, as a Reddit user, u/urboyandy, points out, why did a smart man like Rick go back:

''...really the only thing I can’t look past is how impractical it is for Rick to return to the hotel after conning and assaulting its owners''

Another Reddit user, u/Kims_Goddamn_House, expressed their frustration with Rick's character, who claims to be a badass, but did such a foolish thing in the end:

''For someone who does ”this and that,” he sure had very little survival skills at the end''

Rick's story's plot hole—is there something we're missing or was it just a lazy plot device to orchestrate his death? Who knows, but it surely did not sit right with his character. While Timothy Ratliff's not cleaning the poisonous blender can be blamed on his hazy state of mind after taking a load of pills, Rick was like a cunning fox who should never have made this mistake.
