What is the plot of Overcompensating?
Overcompensating revolves around Benny, a closeted former football player and the homecoming king who befriends a college outsider, Carmen. The show will explore his coming-out journey.
The official synopsis of the show reads as follows:
''...With guidance from Benny’s older sister and her campus-legend boyfriend, Benny and Carmen juggle horrible hookups, flavored vodka, and fake IDs. Deeply funny and personal, the show explores the lengths to which we all overcompensate while on the path to finding out who we really are.”
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Skinner discussed the inspiration behind the show, which is semi-autobiographical, as an exploration of queer people's journey to accept themselves and break from the shackles of created ideal masculinity.
Skinner notes:
“I really wanted queer people to see their experience and the complicatedness of that experience...I feel like the villain of the show in a lot of ways is this addiction to masculinity. I think that everyone feels that, not just queer people.”
The series will debut on May 15, 2025.
