Netflix's teen adventure drama series, Outer Banks, which debuted in April 2020 as a harmless treasure hunt for the main group of friends (the Pogues), saw a sinister turn in the Season 4 finale.
While the Pogues were on a hunt for Blackbeard's treasure in Season 4, they were unaware of the tragic outcome that it would result in. However, things took a turn, and one of the Pogues, JJ, tragically died at the hands of Chandler.
Since this explosive finale, fans have been waiting for the next chapter, season 5, which will also conclude the series. While many fans were expecting that season 5 would return in 2025, it might not be released until 2026.
An update given by co-creators Josh and Jonas Pate revealed that Season 5 will begin shooting in Spring 2025 (April), which will likely continue till the end of the year. Given this filming schedule, the series finale will likely be released in 2026.
More on Outer Banks Season 5 in our story.
Outer Banks Season 5 to likely have a 2026 release window
While fans eagerly await the return of the Pogues for a revenge-filled finale to Outer Banks, the wait might be longer than expected.
Since season 4 part 2 concluded with an explosive ending on November 7, 2024, fans were expecting to see the series finale sometime in the latter half of 2025. But this looks highly unlikely after the update from the show's creators.
Earlier, the Pate Brothers discussed Outer Banks Season 5 production in an interview with Port City Daily, revealing that shooting for Season 5 will begin in Spring 2025.
Looking back at the previous production schedules, which all took roughly 7-8 months, Season 5 will likely wrap up production at the end of 2025. With pre-production and other variables in consideration, Outer Banks Season 5 will likely hit Netflix in the first half of 2026, which is still a long time ahead.
While fans eagerly awaited the show finale in 2025, they may have to wait a few more months before the Pogues' journey concludes.
What can you expect from Outer Banks Season 5?
While you wait for Season 5, here are things to look forward to from the upcoming season, which will conclude the show's five-season run on Netflix.
After Season 4's tragic twist, which led to JJ's death, the Pogues, and especially Kiara, announced revenge against Chandler, which will be a driving force in the final season. After burying JJ in Morocco, the Pogues discover that Chandler has fled to Portugal and will likely go after him to avenge their friend's death.
While Outer Banks began as a teen adventure drama, the Pogues grew up a lot in four seasons, and the closing chapter will cover a dark turn in their life, signaling their growth and transformation as adults.
Teasing the series finale, Josh Pate said in an interview with Netflix Tudum:
''...From here it’s really personal...They may end up getting treasure as part of their revenge, but it’s all about avenging JJ, and trying to get some solace or peace, and to move on from the grief they all feel.”
He added:
“They feel a duty to avenge JJ...If they don’t go after Groff, they’ll feel like they’ve let the spirit of JJ or their friendship down. But I think they all feel it, like they have to do something. It’s almost to just ameliorate the grief they’re feeling.”
