One Hundred Years of Solitude narrates the story of generations of the Buendia family living in the fictional town of Macondo, Colombia. It is an adaptation of an iconic novel by Gabriel Garcia titled the same. The episodic treatment of the story has allowed the makers to bring out the complex character relationships and tragedies at their best.
One Hundred Years of Solitude's first Season features 16 episodes, of which part 1 consists of 8 episodes. On December 11, part 1 of the series premiered, and now, with the finale, viewers are wondering how it ends.
How did Part One end in One Hundred Years of Solitude
The series highlights recurring incestuous relationships and deep-rooted generational trauma. Young Ursula and Jose Arcadio are shown eloping despite being cousins and others' disapproval. They give birth to Aureliano Buendia who was born with an open eye "looking at the world with unsurprising curiosity".
Over the years he grew violent and became a military leader- Colonel Aureliano Buendía. He further assumes responsibility for the revolutionary forces and begins a war against the entire political system of the country. He launches a revolution against Macondo's conservative regime. He ends up leaving evident blood and death behind him when he returns to Macondo. He further ignores his mother Ursula's request to make peace even when the other liberals had wanted to sign the peace treaty. With this, the series shows how ideological differences have been the core reason behind wars like the Civil War was fought between liberals and conservatives.
Amidst this, the highlight of the series is the untimely death of Jose Arcadio and the magical fall of yellow flowers that depicts death, destruction, and change in the world of One Hundred Years of Solitude.
What happened to Jose Arcadio, One Hundred Years of Solitude ending explained
How Jose Arcadio dies is left ambiguous in One Hundred Years of Solitude similar to the book. Jose Arcadio's mental and physical health kept declining over the years and he was found dead in his house one day. As a result of his obsessions, he eventually descends into madness. As per the story in the novel, Jose Arcadio is tied to the tree in the family courtyard for his and the family's safety. Later in his final moments, Jose is untied from the tree and brought home. He experiences some vivid visions about his family before passing away in One Hundred Years of Solitude.
His death is followed by a surreal event of the falling of yellow flowers that in the series world depicts, change, death, and destruction. The series doesn't explicitly reveal if his death is a murder, suicide, or the result of something supernatural. It can be said that some strange men murdered him.
The show suggests the cyclic nature of life through magical realism elements throughout the series. The series brings forth the same essence as that of the novel that history is meant to repeat itself and complicate it as the line between what is destined and what is changeable blurs significantly.
