Peacemaker Season 2 finally has a release date: August 21, 2025. This date was confirmed by DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn himself through a post on his social media accounts on April 6, 2025. Firstly, Gunn revealed that the DI, i.e., Digital Intermediate and mixing of the first episode, is complete and described it as one of the favorite things he ever worked on.
As stated before, the director and Co CEO of DC studios revealed this through a post on his social media. James Gunn posted an 11-second clip from Peacemaker Season 2 along with the following caption:
"Counting the days until Peace on Earth. I just finished the DI & Mix on the Season Premiere yesterday and wow it’s one of my favorite things ever. DC Studios’ #Peacemaker Season 2 coming soon only on @StreamOnMax August 21."
While it is usual for directors to describe their work on a project as their favorite, Given how acclaimed the first season was, it won't be surprising if there's a kernel of truth to James Gunn's words about Peacemaker Season 2.
What will Peacemaker Season 2 be about?
Not much is known about the upcoming season apart from the fact that one of the major antagonists of Peacemaker Season 2 will be Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. This is not surprising because John Cena's Peacemaker/Christopher Smith soon has to confront his past of unjustly murdering Rick Flag Jr., played by Joel Kinnaman in The Suicide Squad (2021). It should also be noted that Flag Sr. went through a lot in Creature Commandos.
Firstly, he may have developed feelings for Princess Ilana Rostovic, who probably might have been manipulating him. Later, he is going to appear in the upcoming Superman movie, which may further push him down a darker path. Here, he may finally learn the identity of the man who murdered his son and swear revenge. James Gunn said this about Flag Sr.'s role in Peacemaker Season 2:
"You take the character of Rick Flag [Sr.], who starts out in Creature Commandos as one character, goes to Superman, continues to evolve and change, and then he starts out as a protagonist of one show and ends up as basically the antagonist of Season 2."
Other than the villain of the season, we also know that Season 2 may have a different opening song than the one in the first season. James Gunn spoke about the new song during the February 2025 press conference. When Steve Weintraub from Collider asked Gunn when fans can expect to hear the opening song of the second season, the Co CEO said:
“I don't know about when they're going to see it. I was talking about the other day because one, it was really fun in the first, one of the things is we totally kept that from the public until the first episode aired and it flipped people out, which was the most fun about it. Now people know it's coming, so it's not as exciting in that respect, but, but I went through a lot of permutations of potential songs, that I was gonna have it open to, you know, including reusing, doing a different dancing to the Do You Wanna Taste It, but then we ended up with something else that I think works, and I think it's the second season is much more about the characters and the interconnectivity between the characters and their personal lives and it's more about Chris Smith than it is about Peacemaker and so I think that the song reflects that, overarching theme.”
Fellow DC Studios Co CEO Peter Safran appreciated the song while revealing that he had not heard the song before. Safran's exact words were:
“Never heard the song, never heard the band, [but] it’s so good.”
All these comments have fans excited to see Rick Flag Sr. in live-action format for the second time in Peacemaker Season 2, the first one being in Superman.
Consisting of eight episodes, Peacemaker Season 2 will begin streaming on Max on August 21, 2025.
