Steven Knight surprised all the Peaky Blinders fans with a movie announcement after the BBC crime series concluded with Season 6.

But Cillian Murphy's Thomas Shelby's last scene in Season 6 might have hinted that a sequel film is on its way, where the ruthless gang leader says:

''Oh, I am back, back from under the ground.''

Not long after, Knight revealed that he had always planned to do a movie, which makes these words even more effective because Murphy will reprise his role for the movie, as he discussed in an interview with Netflix's Tudum:

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me. It is very gratifying to be re-collaborating with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This is one for the fans.”

More on Peaky Blinders film in our story.

Steven Knight always had plans to conclude Peaky Blinders with a movie

When nobody saw it coming, Knight did it again and surprised fans by announcing a feature film starring Murphy.

The ruthless gangster's journey was thought to have ended with the Season 6 finale, where he rose from the dead, but the beloved hero will undertake one more adventure before he finally rests.

While there were reports about Knight developing another season for the show, the COVID-19 pandemic changed his plans, as he discussed in an interview with Deadline:

“Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That is what is going to happen.”

Knight has discussed how he wanted the show to explore the characters, especially Thomas' journey between the two Great Wars, which is why, he wanted to end the show with Season 7, which would have explored the gang at the beginning of WW2.

But the change of plans, instead, gave us a feature film, which will explore a different time period for its characters:

In an interview with Netflix Tudum, Knight shared his excitement for the new film:

“I’m thrilled to see the cameras rolling on this new chapter of the Peaky Blinders story, set during World War II. The country is at war, and so, of course, are our Peaky Blinders.”

How does the Peaky Blinders Season 6 finale set up the movie?

Thomas Shelby riding on a white horse in the Season 6 finale was a full circle moment for the Birmingham gangster, who started while riding a black horse. The transformation of the horse's color from black to white signifies the character's transformation as he was literally born in the finale.

Thomas deals with the possibility of dying throughout the finale and even tries to take his life. But thanks to a vision from his dead daughter, he discovers a connection between his doctor and Oswald Mosley and understands that his doctor has lied to him.

While he confronts him with a gun, he spares his life and says,

''The only person who could kill Thomas Shelby is Thomas Shelby himself''

He finally spares his life and rides away on a white horse. This does show his transformation because old Thomas would have killed him, and it sets up a different version of our hero in the film.

The Peaky Blinders movie will explore a different setting for the gang: WW2.
