Daredevil: Born Again and the original Netflix show have won fans over with their portrayal of The Man Without Fear and his supporting characters. However, there is one thing that fans have been asking for from the showmakers ever since the show began a decade ago in 2015: a Daredevil costume with the "DD" chest emblem, something the previous three seasons and Born Again avoided.
Recently, on April 8, 2025, Emily Gunshor, the costume designer for Born Again, was interviewed by RadioTimes. In this interview, she addressed the "DD" chest emblem and spoke about the process that went behind designing the Daredevil, White Tiger, Bullseye, and Muse costumes.
What did Daredevil: Born Again's costume designer say about the "DD" chest emblem?
The first thing that the costume designer touched on was the lack of the "DD" chest emblem on the costume seen in Daredevil: Born Again Season 1. She spoke about the iconic emblem by saying this:
“The ‘DD’ logo on Daredevil’s suit is a big thing for the character. A lot of fans want to see the logo on his chest. But, for this season’s red suit, it was a specific story point and a very specific discussion that we were not going to put the ‘DD’ on his chest.”
The designer ultimately gave this reason for the absence of the emblem:
“There are discussions I can weigh in on and offer opinions on, but, ultimately, for these comic book projects, it goes to a higher level.”
Netflix's Daredevil and Born Again prove that even if a superhero adaptation were to avoid an iconic aspect of the comics, as long as it retains the essence of the comics, fans would accept it with open arms. The costume designer discussed how she designed the costumes for Daredevil, Bullseye, White Tiger, and Muse.
Emily Gunshor, the Daredevil: Born Again costume designer, explains how she designed the costumes:
Other than the "DD" chest emblem, the costume designer discussed how she and the others designed the costumes seen in Daredevil: Born Again. Firstly, she discussed the Daredevil suits seen in the show. Here's how the Daredevil suit was designed:
“The objective for this Daredevil was to make a sleeker suit. Something more streamlined than he wore in She-Hulk and Echo. We wanted to maintain the shape of the face and horns, and the fabric was 3D-printed so we could change the pattern and texture of different pieces.”
She revealed that the costume designing team created five suits in total, of which three were reserved for Charlie Cox and two for Cox's stunt double. Laughing, the designer said:
“We could have used a whole lot more. But these things are expensive!”
Then, she went on to reveal that the idea behind the Muse, White Tiger, and Bullseye costumes was that they are more homemade:
“We made all three in-house, with the idea that they’re shopping at the superhero tactical store and then augmenting.”
The designer further revealed that her personal favorite costume from Daredevil: Born Again was that of Muse.
“Muse is one of my favourite characters, with a suit made out of canvas. But if you’ve ever painted on canvas, you’ll know it has zero stretch. So, to achieve the muscle fit and body contouring, we used a super-stretchy fabric that we painted and dyed to make look like canvas.”
Seven episodes of Daredevil: Born Again are currently available to stream on Disney+, with the eighth one expected to be released on Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
