Shark Tank investor, the owner of O'Leary Financial Group, including O'Shares Investment Advisers, O'Leary Ventures, and O'Leary Fine Wines, faced a $2 million lawsuit along with his wife, Linda.
In 2019, during a boat crash accident, two people passed away, and Linda was accused of being under the influence while driving. Linda's lawyers explained that she only had vodka prior to the breath test and wasn't aware of who handed her the alcohol. The couple sued the boat owner, Irv Edwards, and the driver, Richard Ruh, in a $3 million lawsuit.
In an interview with FOX News in October 2019, Kevin talked about the tragic accident, stating that the drivers of both boats "were given marine violations." He said:
"It's a horrific accident and it's exactly that, nobody wanted this to happen and both drivers of both boats were given marine violations, they're not criminal charges."
Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary and his wife faced a $2 million lawsuit
Shark Tank investor Kevin O'Leary and his wife were in Miami when they faced a boating accident that led to the death of two people. The lawsuit was filed by one of the victim's family members. O'Leary and his wife Linda were on a boat that was under the control of driver Richard Ruh, who also faced the consequences of this tragic accident due to the lack of navigation lights while driving the boat.
Linda, on the other hand, had admitted to the consumption of vodka before the breath test but after the accident. She was charged with a $1 million fine and 18 months in prison. Meanwhile, the drivers were to receive a $10,000 fine once found guilty and were to be investigated regarding their marine boating license.
This happened back on August 24, 2019, when the Shark Tank investor's wife was driving their boat on Lake Joseph in Ontario, Canada. Things took a different turn when Kevin and Linda's boat crashed with another luxury boat, causing three people to get injured alongside two deaths.
After the lawsuit was filed, Linda's lawyer claimed she was not under the influence while driving. O'Leary and his team filed a federal court motion stating there was no negligence from their side and that, as per the Marine Liability Act, to restrict the assigned amount under $1 million.
The Shark Tank star also filed a $3 million lawsuit against the owner of the boat they crashed into, Irv Edwards, and the driver, Richard Ruh. In an interview with Fox Business on October 30, 2019, Kevin opened up about the "horrific accident," mentioning that both the drivers were "given marine violations." He shared the reason why he didn't want to discuss the matter publicly:
"But out of respect for the families that were involved in this and the people that were injured, I really don't discuss it much, because I want the process to just play out as it should."
Kevin continued stating that he wanted to respect the victims' family's privacy. He said:
"I have a lot of respect for their privacy as they grieve. It's a horrible accident, just that, there's nobody to blame, it's sad that it occurred and my heart goes out to those families and that's what I tell everybody."
New episodes of Shark Tank air on the ABC every week on Fridays at 8:00 pm ET.
