Star Trek: Picard revolved around the life of Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The popular series wrapped up in April 2023, with Season 3 as its final season. Although the series depicted a satisfying ending, with all of the USS Enterprise reuniting, fans always wonder if it will return with a Season 4 in the never-ending franchise.

However, in an interview with CBS Morning, Sir Patrick Stewart shared that Season 3 indeed was the final season of Star Trek: Picard. He said:

"There are no plans for a future."

However, he also spoke in the interview about the nature of the beloved franchise and how it always keeps growing. Additionally, he alked about young people who love Star Trek, and their interest in the field of science and technology that began with the franchise.

More on this in our story.

Sir Patrick Stewart always wanted Star Trek: Picard to be a three-season show

Sir Patrick Stewart didn’t want to return as Jean-Luc Picard after Star Trek: Nemesis. However, with the help of screenwriter James Duff and novelist Kisten Beyer, series creator Alex Kurtzman convinced him to return as the fan-favorite character because there was still a lot to cover about his life.

In an article in Time written by Sir Patrick Stewart, the veteran actor mentioned three conditions that had to be fulfilled for him to be part of the series. One of the conditions was that Star Trek: Picard would not run for more than three seasons.

Other than Stewart, co-creator Akiva Goldsman also confirmed that Star Trek: Picard was always planned as a 3-season series. In a 2022 interview with TrekMovie, Goldsman shared:

"The door is always open for a season four… but as of now, it is just three seasons. It was always planned to be three seasons… If some combination of CBS and Patrick [Stewart] and the world all said, “season four” I’m sure we would engage it, dare I say? But no, currently it remains a three-season object."

Furthermore, the showrunner and EP Terry Matalas also shared the same sentiment about ending the show after three seasons, after giving the USS Enterprise a proper farewell in a TCA panel. According to AVClub, Matalas said:

"What better way to end the journey than to look back at the beginning, and bring some Next Gen friends? The storyline has a strong sense of conclusion."

Will we see more of Sir Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard in the Star Trek franchise? Speculations explored

Star Trek: Picard might be the end of the TNG crew. However, with a franchise that is always growing, decisions are also bent according to fans' desires.

Stewart has always been vocal about doing a movie as Jean-Luc Picard, as shared in the Time article.

He has also shared in his memoir, Making It So, that he wants one final Star Trek: Picard movie to conclude Jean-Luc Picard’s story. He wrote:

Not a Next Generation movie, as we have already done four of those. This would be an expansion and deepening of the universe as we’ve seen it in Star Trek: Picard. I’ve discussed this with Jonathan, Brent, and LeVar, and they are all game. Jonathan is my first choice to direct it.

However, no updates about a movie or a spin-off series have been shared by Paramount yet.
