‘I’ll Be There for You’ is now synonymous with Friends. The theme song, performed by The Rembrandts, is one of the first things that comes to the audience’s minds when they think of the cult classic sitcom.
Just like the show, the song also achieved a dedicated fan following over the years and is a part of numerous fans’ playlists. However, the Friends cast members were surprisingly not too impressed by the theme music when they started working on the show.
During a conversation on BBC's The One Show in November 2016, Jennifer Aniston, who played Rachel, revealed that neither of the main cast members liked I’ll Be There for You. They did not even like how they had to dance around a fountain for the title video:
“No one was really a big fan of that theme song. I don’t mean to say that, but we felt it was a little, I don’t know—dancin’ in a pond, or like, a fountain felt a little odd.”
Jennifer Aniston once revealed the Friends cast hated I’ll Be There for You
During the interview, Jennifer Aniston revealed that she, along with her co-stars Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, David Schwimmer, Matthew Perry, and Matt LeBlanc, disliked the Friends theme song and only danced to it because they were asked to:
“We did it because we were told to.”
Aniston added that while she is not fond of the song, she does love the sitcom and often watches it on television:
“Yeah! I can’t help it. First, I’m trying to remember which episode it is and half the time I’m saying to myself, ‘I don’t remember that.’ You get sucked into the nostalgia of it.”
Though the cast did not like I’ll Be There for You, the audience embraced the song, and it ended up topping the charts upon its release. The track, performed by pop-rock duo The Rembrandts, featured the opening credits across all 10 seasons of Friends from 1994 to 2004.
The extended version of the song was officially released in May 1995 and climbed up the Billboard charts in the following weeks. In the show’s opening credits, the cast is seen dancing and having fun around a fountain. While the show was set in New York City, the iconic fountain is situated at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.
Interestingly, the creators initially wanted to use R.E.M.’s Shiny Happy People as the theme song for Friends; however, the band declined. The team then opted for an original track, with lyrics being penned by the series creators, David Crane and Marta Kauffman, along with songwriter Allee Willis.
The melody was composed by Marta Kauffman’s husband, Michael Skloff. With its catchy rhythm, upbeat vibe, and iconic handclaps, the song became of part of the 1990s pop culture and remains a fan-favorite.
Friends is considered one of the most popular sitcoms of all time, which struck a chord with the audience with its humorous and relatable storyline, and some heartwarming moments.
The NBC series starred Jennifer Aniston as Rachel Green, David Schwimmer as Ross Geller, Courteney Cox as Monica Geller, the late Matthew Perry as Chandler Bing, Lisa Kudrow as Phoebe Buffay, and Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani.
