On a funny episode of Steve TV Show from 2018, Steve Harvey had the young cast of Young Sheldon play an 80s pop quiz. The show takes place in the late 1980s, so you'd think the child actors would know something about that time.
Reagan Revord, the young actor who portrays Missy Cooper, chuckled when questioned if they were familiar with what a Walkman was.
A young Reagan from 2018 replied,
"No, I did not."
Harvey, known for his charismatic hosting, led the kids on a journey through some 80s items, such as floppy disks, VHS tapes, and a Rolodex.
This went viral on YouTube with over 18 million views. People liked watching the actors try to figure out what these things were used for. There was a moment when they thought a floppy disk was like a memory card for a camera.
It's not too surprising, considering how different things are now. The company also mentioned that the segment became very popular online, with fans enjoying the kids' attempts to understand past technologies that were once common.
Harvey explained, holding back laughter:
"It does what a chip does."
The moment that stood out in the quiz was revealing a Cabbage Patch Doll.
It showed everyone that the stars on the show are not at all connected to the pop culture of the time their show is set in, the 1980s.
Young Sheldon cast’s misconceptions about 80s tech
The quiz clearly demonstrated the extent to which technology has progressed, leaving some 80s gadgets utterly unknown to the Young Sheldon actors. One initial challenge for them was figuring out what a floppy disk was.
Upon being shown the object, the children took a moment before guessing it was a "memory chip" found in cameras. With a smile, Harvey explained that it was actually an older type of data storage, much larger than even a flash drive.
There was another amusing moment when the kids were asked to identify a VHS tape. After Harvey suggested it was related to watching movies, the guesses varied from "DVD" to "something for recipes."
It was ironic since VHS tapes were the go-to for home movie entertainment before DVDs took over in the late 90s. Despite Young Sheldon series accurately depicting the late 80s, its young cast has been raised in a starkly different digital environment.
Young Sheldon cast gets a crash course in 80s nostalgia
The cast was given a Rolodex, which used to be a common office gadget for keeping track of people's contact information. The younger actors were confused and thought it was something to hold recipes. This was quite funny and showed how much times have changed since smartphones took over.
The real surprise came with the Cabbage Patch Doll. At first, the kids from the cast of Young Sheldon weren't sure what was in the box. After a bit of teasing, Harvey showed them the doll, and they gasped with excitement.
In the 1980s, these dolls were incredibly popular and sold out super fast. It was like how the new PlayStation 5 is today—everyone wanted one!
