Fans of BLACKPINK’s Jisoo are in for a treat as Newtopia, a new K-drama starring her is all set to release on February 7, 2025. It is a zombie thriller with a romantic theme and Parasite fame, Han Jinwon, serves as the co-writer.
Jisoo had previously starred in the K-drama, Snowdrop, and it’s almost four years that she is returning to K-dramas with Newtopia. Talking about the same to iMBC, via Soompi, Jisoo had mentioned:
“I was drawn to Young Ju’s charm from the start, and I wanted to portray her as authentically as possible. I hope viewers enjoy watching her grow in many ways.”
It was back in 2024 August that Variety confirmed Jisoo’s role as the lead in Newtopia. Now that the zombie romantic-comedy has fixed a release date, let us now explore all that is known about it, including its plot, cast, and more.
Newtopia Release Date
Newtopia will be released on February 7, 2025, at 8 p.m. KST and will be available to watch on the Coupang Play for viewers in South Korea. However, for fans all over the world, the show will also drop on Prime Video in selected regions and on the same day.
The first two episodes of Newtopia will premiere simultaneously on Prime Video and the next 6 episodes will drop weekly, every Friday.
What is Newtopia about?
Newtopia is based on the novel Influenza by Han Sangwoon and follows Lee Jaeyoon and Kang Youngjoo, his girlfriend. Kang Youngjoo is an engineer and as Lee Jaeyoon will have to go away for his mandatory military service, the couple breaks up rather abruptly because they will have to live apart for a long time.
However, on that very day, a zombie outbreak starts at Seol and the couple who had just broken up would do anything to get back together. The official logline as provided by Prime Video reads:
“Can two broken hearts meet halfway in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?”
The show will therefore have a full-on zombie outbreak while also being a warm love story. The combination of these two unlikely genres is what has made the fans excited for Newtopia.
Who is in the cast of Newtopia? Details Explored
Besides Jisoo, the Newtopia has a solid cast, which includes Park Jeong-min as Lee Jae-yoon, Im Sung-jae as Ra In-ho, Kang Young-seok, Kim Chan-hyung, Tang Jun-sang, Lee Hak-joo, and Kim Jun-han.
As Jisoo is making her K-drama comeback with the show, she talked about balancing her acting and singing career and in an interview with Elle Korea, mentioned:
“There’s only a difference in the energy shown in each moment, but both require a long commitment and dedication, so the weight of responsibility is the same. However, when I receive a good script, I make an effort to meet with the director and have many conversations. I think it’s important to ensure our direction aligns, as we’ll be working together for a long time.”
Her acting skill was also praised by Newtopia director Yoon Sung Hyun, who said:
“Her quirky and humorous traits aligned 99 percent with the Young Ju I envisioned in the script, and she brought the character to life beyond my expectations.”
Besides Jisoo, the other lead Park Jung-min has also had a great career and is popular for shows like Hellbound, Smugglers, The 8 Show, and more.
