The Challenge 40 has taken a halt after the last released episode on December 18 and will come with new episodes in the new year in 2025. The show has its final challengers who will be competing in a few last challenges before one emerges as the winner. The last few eliminations have been intense, as it was about saving the spot for the finale.
Derek Chavez, who went through an elimination challenge in episode 16 against Cory, managed to defend his spot. The win was special for Derek as it was her sister's birthday too. When the challengers were enjoying the delicious "Burger King" meals, Derek opened up about her sister and her sad demise in 2021. Cory and Derek both expressed their desperate need to win but maintained mutual respect.
Ultimately, in the elimination challenge, which was more about mental than physical abilities, Derek turned the odds to his side and won the round. Derek opened up about his elimination win during the December 13 episode of Johnny Bananas's podcast, Death, Taxes, and Bananas.
He shared that he hyped himself to "win" because he could not afford to lose. He further added:
"The whole thing with my little sister that was just the motivating thing and I mean I believe of like Words of Affirmation and like talking to yourself hyping yourself up and I literally went into that and I was sitting there and I'm was like, you got this. You're not you're not losing."
The Challenge 40 star Derek Chavez admits that the "puzzle" worked in his favor during the elimination challenge
The Challenge 40 episode 16 had Derek and Cory in the elimination round, and the challenge was called, "Closing Time". The challengers had to race and bring cinder blocks to form an image out of it. Solving the puzzle proved to be an equalizer for Derek, who himself admitted it during the podcast of Johnny Bananas.
He mentioned to Bananas that the moment he saw the puzzle, his nerves were calmed, and he knew that he would be able to put it off, which is what happened. Bananas also put forward his view, supporting that elimination challenges should be an "equalizer"; otherwise, whoever has a physical advantage would always have a winning streak, making it unfair for other players in the show.
The Challenge 40 star Derek mentioned that he strategized his moves and planned on collecting all the blocks on the small platform and then putting them in order, which he pointed out was the reason he won.
