James Gunn's entry into the DC verse shifted things around for the studio, turning over many projects and initiating new ones. The director had reassured Blue Beetle fans that the highly awaited Blue Beetle animation series was something DC would continue working on.

As fans continue to wait for an update on the series, Xolo Maridueña, who plays the titular character, dropped an update for fans, and thankfully, it's a good one.

Speaking to Collider at the Saturn Awards, the actor said that the studio is working on the series, and we can expect more updates just as soon as Superman, DC's biggest project this year, is done and dusted.

"I know everyone at DC is working hard on our Blue Beetle animated show so that's going to be a really great way as like Blue Beetle 1.5, 2.0, whatever you want to call it. I'm really excited to explore that side of things... and see how we can push the world of Palmera City over animation. And, you know, I'm ready for Superman to be the biggest movie this year so that we can throw Blue Beetle right back into where the heck he needs to be."

It is unclear if the animation series is already in the works; however, the update is reassuring for fans.

What is Blue Beetle about?

The series centers on Maridueña's character Jaime Reyes, aka Blue Beetle, who gets possession of an alien technology called Scarab and gets chosen to be its host, which leads to him getting superpowers and a suit of armor, becoming the superhero, Blue Beetle. Ángel Manuel Soto directed the film based on Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's script.

Blue Beetle was one of the last projects made by DC under Jack Snyder and was initially supposed to release on streaming sites only. It later made its way to the big screens, and the film opened to highly positive reviews, even if it didn't earn much at the box office. The lukewarm success prompted the studio to create an animation series based on the character, production for which will likely take place soon.

The animated series can either be a reboot of the original film or a follow-up sequel that will continue the plot after the first film's events.

You can stream Blue Beetle on Max.
