Amazon had big dreams for Citadel. The show was designed to be a global franchise with spinoffs from around the world. But recently, things took a turn. Two international spinoffs, Citadel: Honey Bunny and Citadel: Diana, have officially been cancelled. Don’t worry, though. Their stories aren’t disappearing, they’ll be blended into the second season of the original Citadel series.
Let’s break down what this really means.
Citadel is a big-budget action-thriller starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas. It’s produced by the Russo Brothers, the duo behind some of the biggest Marvel hits. The idea was to make a central “mothership” show with international spinoffs tied to it, each based in a different country but all part of the same universe.
Sounds ambitious, right? That’s because it was.
Citadel: Honey Bunny was India’s take on the global Citadel story. It starred Varun Dhawan and Samantha Ruth Prabhu, and it brought action, espionage, and emotional drama with an Indian flavor.
Meanwhile, Citadel: Diana came out of Italy in October 2024. It was produced by Cattleya and backed by ITV Studios. It told a uniquely European story while tying into the larger Citadel world.
Diana had the best launch for any Italian original on Prime Video. Critics and viewers in Italy praised it for its bold direction and strong performances.
Amazon pulls the plug
Amazon confirmed that both Honey Bunny and Diana will not be returning for a second season. The decision came as a surprise, especially given how well they performed.
The twist? Their storylines aren’t being dropped. Instead, they’ll be combined into Season 2 of the original Citadel show.
Rather than continue as separate series, Amazon plans to fold both spinoffs into the main storyline. This may be a creative decision, but it also looks like a business move to streamline costs and attention on one show.
Here’s what Vernon Sanders, head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, had to say:
“While these successful and widely enjoyed international chapters will not continue as individual series, Season 2 of Citadel will be our most exhilarating yet. With high-stakes storytelling, new additions to our amazing cast and bold, cinematic ambition, the new season will deepen the emotional journeys of Nadia, Mason and Orlick against the relentless force that is Manticore.”
Clearly, they have big plans for Season 2.
Season 2 of Citadel is shaping up to be much bigger than Season 1. With storylines from Honey Bunny and Diana included, the plot will be more global, more emotional, and hopefully, more thrilling.
