A prequel to Dexter, Dexter: Original Sin Season 2 has been renewed by Paramount+ with Showtime. Following the original sin that turned young Dexter into a serial killer, the first season premiered with 10 episodes, concluding on February 14, 2025. Mere weeks after the season finale was released, a renewal was confirmed for the prequel series.
A writers' room is soon going to be set up for the prequel series, set in 1991 Miami, which follows the titular anti-hero as a student, played by Patrick Gibson. Production dates are yet to be released.
Everything we know about Dexter: Original Sin Season 2

The first season of the prequel, in its final episode, built a foundation for Dexter: Original Sin Season 2. Clyde Phillips, the original showrunner for Dexter as well as Dexter: Original Sin Season 1, is returning as showrunner for the second season as well. Patrick Gibson will be returning to his titular role, as well as Michael C. Hall (the original Dexter), who will be returning as the prequel's narrator.
In addition to Dexter, most of the Original Sin Season 1 cast will be returning, including Christina Milian, Molly Brown, James Martinez, Christian Slater, Reno Wilson, Alex Shimizu, and guest stars Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar.
The show is set 15 years before the original Dexter timeline in Miami in the 1990s. The first season follows Dexter coming face-to-face with his 'killer instinct' and refining it under the support and guidance of his adoptive father Harry, played by Christian Slater. As Dexter's urge to kill grows, his father helps him design a code by which he finds and kills the people who, according to them, deserve what's coming for them.
The challenge for young Dexter, as well as his father, is escaping from the law while they are their own judge, jury, and executioner. The task of avoiding law enforcement becomes even trickier when Dexter begins his internship at the Miami Metro Police Department in the Forensics lab. It remains to be seen where the plot moves in Dexter: Original Sin Season 2.
Clyde Phillips, in conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, talked about the prequel series as a chance to bring to life an origin story for Dexter. Here's what he said about the work that goes behind the first season, as well as Dexter: Original Sin Season 2:
"This season’s a whole Easter egg hunt, there’s a lot of chatter on the internet already about what we’re putting in here, and why. It’s also just so fun because this season is a period piece, within a period piece. We have all of this great imagery we get to use from the ’90s, but also from the ’70s, with Harry’s storyline. We get to lay in all these wonderful wall phones, the first car phone, whatever it is. We’re having so much fun watching people watch out for all of that.”
Paramount seems to be paying a lot of attention to the Dexter franchise, as Phillips is currently also in production of Dexter: A Resurrection, for a summer release—the follow-up to Dexter: New Blood.
