In Invincible Season 3, Episode 3, Mark ditches his traditional yellow-black suit, which viewers got used to in the previous two seasons. Instead, he gets a new suit created by Art Rosenbaum (voiced by Mark Hamill). The new suit is black and blue in color. This change has fans wondering the reason behind the costume change for Mark Grayson/Invincible.

This change was explained by Robert Kirkman, the man who created the Invincible comics in the first place and also serves as the creator of the animated series. He and showrunner Simon Racioppa were recently interviewed by Russ Milheim from The Direct. In that interview, Kirkman came up with interesting parallels for explaining the suit change in Invincible Season 3.

How did Kirkman explain the suit change in Invincible Season 3?

In the interview with The Direct, Kirkman explained that Mark's suit change in Invincible Season 3 was a reference to a common trope used in the comics. He explained this when Milheim asked the comic creator about Invincible's new suit, featuring blue and black attire, which is often compared to Spider-Man's symbiote suit. Since the symbiote suit reflected a darker era of his life, it prompted questions about how the story was tailored.

Hearing this, Robert Kirkman replied to Milheim's question:

"That's definitely by design. When Cory Walker, Ryan Ottley, and I were doing the comics, we very much tried to play up the tropes of the comic industry. The superhero getting the new costume is something that happens in almost every superhero story."

Robert Kirkman brought up Spider-Man and continued to explain:

"You know, there's a lot of stories that come from that change and Spider-Man is a good example of that. The kind of darkness that comes from that change and the emergence of Venom as a clear villain that comes from that is a really cool addition to the mythos of [Spider-Man]."

The writer drew further parallels between Invincible and the wall-crawler:

"And I think there are a lot of worthy additions to the mythos of Invincible that show up during this costume change, that kind of mirror, what happened with Spider-Man."

It should be noted that the new Invincible costume, unlike Spider-Man's symbiote is just a suit and not an alien organic life. So, Mark, unlike Peter Parker, won't be psychologically influenced by the suit. However, much like the black-suit Spider-Man storyline, this suit in the comics takes Invincible's story in unexpected brutal directions, something Invincible Season 3 seems to be hinting at.

Mark Grayson’s new blue and black suit also symbolizes darker storylines, like using previous seasons' villains to carry out rescue missions and Mark's strained relationship with Cecil. The new suit reflects these darker plotlines better than Mark's previous yellow and black suit, which viewers have gotten used to. However, based on Krikman's comments, the suit and its symbolism do have potential for Invincible Season 3.
