Fans went gaga earlier this year when Abbott Elementary had a crossover episode with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The two sitcoms joined forces for a special event, leading to a laugh riot for the audience.
However, it looks like the creators of Abbott Elementary are not done with crossovers yet. In a recent interview, showrunners Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern have revealed that they are open to collaborating with The Pitt, the hit medical drama on Max.
Abbott Elementary showrunners want to do a crossover episode with The Pitt
The idea does not come as a surprise, as both Abbott Elementary and The Pitt are co-produced by Warner Bros. Television. However, the two shows have starkly different themes and premises. While the former is a light-hearted comedy series, the latter is an intense medical drama.
Schumacker stated in an interview with The Wrap:
“In terms of another crossover, we haven’t talked about anything in earnest. That was a process of making that one happen, and so [we are] definitely open to it, not necessarily be like chomping at the bit, because we’re tired, but we will be reinvigorated in like a month when the writers’ room starts back up and who knows? We shoot right across the street from The Pitt.”
Previously, the Abbott and It's Always Sunny crossover became possible because both shows aired on Disney-owned networks: ABC and FXX, respectively. Schumacker also highlighted how being owned by the same company helped in the crossover between the two sitcoms and stated in the interview:
“We’re a co-production with Warner Brothers and 20th and ‘Sunny’ is obviously part of the Disney family, so that helped ease it a little bit too. Sometimes corporate synergy leads to good things.”
However, The Pitt airs on Max, in which Disney does not have a stake. Hence, despite the showrunners’ interest, Abbott Elementary and The Pitt crossover might be impossible to make.
While the Abbott-Pitt crossover might be uncertain, audiences still have a special episode to look forward to. The second part of the Abbott and Sunny crossover will is set to air on FXX on July 9, 2025. It will also mark the first episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia Season 17.
