HBO is helming a reboot of the Harry Potter movies based on J.K. Rowling’s original work, with an untitled series. With the Wizarding World project scheduled to premiere next year on Max, a familiar name recently popped up for his reported involvement with the production.

According to Daily Mail’s entertainment editor, Grant Tucker, Tom Felton will play an off-camera role in the forthcoming HBO series. The 37-year-old actor is known for portraying Draco Malfoy, a Slytherin student and Harry’s adversary, in the original movie adaptations of J.K. Rowling’s books.

Daily Mail highlighted how Tom Felton avoided directly criticizing the Harry Potter author on her anti-trans stance, unlike his former castmates Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. A source told Grant Tucker:

“Everyone knows that Tom has Jo’s blessing. While others turned their backs on her, he treated her with dignity even if he disagreed with her. And now it seems he will be the one original cast member who will be involved with the new production.”

A few days back, Daily Mail revealed that Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint were reportedly “kept in the dark” about the production of HBO’s untitled Harry Potter reboot series. Their exclusion was likely due to their feud with J.K. Rowling, who serves as the executive producer. An insider shared with Grant Tucker,

“This is her chance to move on from all the vitriol she has endured at the hands of those she made famous and start again with a new set of faces. In many ways, it is her ultimate revenge for their betrayal.”

Tom Felton was also asked about Rowling’s stance in a 2022 interview with The Independent. The Rise of the Planet of the Apes actor didn’t criticize the author and instead said,

“I’m pro-choice, pro-discussion, pro-human rights across the board, and pro-love.”

WB Discovery announced the first cast members of the J.K. Rowling-executive produced HBO Harry Potter TV series earlier this month

After reports and rumors about the casting, Warner Bros. Discovery officially announced the first adult cast members on April 14. On behalf of the studio, Francesca Gardiner confirmed the names of the primary adult cast members, along with the characters they will play. Here’s the list of the first confirmed castmates for the upcoming Harry Potter series:

  • John Lithgow (Dumbledore)
  • Janet McTeer (McGonagall)
  • Paapa Essiedu (Snape)
  • Nick Frost (Hagrid)
  • Luke Thallon (Quirrell)
  • Paul Whitehouse (Filch)

Francesca Gardiner will serve as the showrunner, while Mark Mylod, the director of Succession and The Last of Us, will direct a few episodes. Both will also executive produce the series alongside J.K. Rowling, who was confirmed for the role in April 2023 at a press event for Max.

The production is set to commence this summer, with the yet-unannounced young cast assuming the roles of Harry, Hermione, and Ron, among other Hogwarts students.
