Sean Baker’s Anora and RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barne’s Nickel Boys have won Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay in the WGA Awards 2025.
WGA Awards took place on February 15, 2025, simultaneously in New York and Los Angeles. Comedian Roy Wood Jr. hosted the New York event, while Joel Kim Booster hosted the Los Angeles event.
The big win has made Sean Baker and Anora a strong contender for the Oscars as it has also won the Producers Guild award, the Directors Guild award, and the Critics Choice Award. Nickel Boys won the first award of the ceremony, giving them a boost for the upcoming Academy Awards as the film is nominated for two Oscars.

Anora and Nickel Boys win the Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay WGA Awards
Roy Wood Jr. who hosted the New York leg of the WGA Awards informed viewers that the screenplay awards would be presented first as the nominees had to leave early to get to London as the BAFTA Awards were scheduled on February 16, 2025.
Sean Baker’s Anora follows the story of a young woman who marries the son of a Russian Oligarch. However, her life is threatened as the news reaches the family.
Other than Anora, A Real Pain, Challengers, Civil War, and My Old Ass were nominated in the Original Screenplay category in the WGA Awards.
Anora won the big three awards- the Writers Guild, Producers Guild, and Directors Guild awards. 10 of the 11 previous movies that have won these awards have gone on to win the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture. This makes Anora’s candidature in the upcoming Oscar ceremony stronger.
Furthermore, RaMell Ross’s Nickel Boys is a historical drama that tells the story of two African-American boys, Elwood ( Ethan Harisse) and Turner ( Brandon Wilson), who are sent to a reform school in Florida. Based on Colson Whitehead’s novel of the same name, the film accounts their life and experiences in the brutal environment.
Nickel Boys won the first award of the WGA ceremony in the category of Adapted Screenplay beating A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Hit Man, and Wicked.
The win has boosted the film’s chances in the upcoming Academy Awards ceremony as it has been nominated for two awards- Best Motion Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Other than Anora and Nickel Boys, Shogun and Hacks won the big awards in the TV shows category.
The historical drama Shogun won three WGA Awards, winning in the drama series category, New Series, and the episode named Anjin winning in the episodic drama category.
The comedy show Hacks also won two awards, winning in the comedy series category and the episode Bulletproof winning the episodic comedy category.
