Wednesday Season 2 is arriving this summer, and co-showrunner Miles Millar has shared that a new character will be joining the show. The new character joining the show is Grandmama Hester Frump (played by Joanna Lumley), mother to Morticia Addams.
From the season two trailer, it looks like Grandmama Hester will bring more drama, darkness, fun, and mystery to the series. However, Hester is going to be a guest character, not a recurring one. Hence, her presence will be impactful, yet limited.
Wednesday is known for blending sinister plotlines with dark humor, and Hester’s arrival will add even more to that. Fans can look forward to learning more about the Addams family's unknown past through her. Morticia Addams is an iconic character, and perhaps Hester will help us understand her daughter better as well.
Wednesday Season 2 new character revealed
The new addition of Grandmama Hester in Wednesday Season 2 will give viewers a closer look at Wednesday’s extended family and more relationship dynamics. According to Good Housekeeping, Miles Millar spoke regarding the new casting, saying,
"The idea of bringing Hester, Morticia’s mother, into the fold this season was something we were so excited about,"
He continued,
"The first day on set when Joanna walked on, she just was Hester, and she nailed every single line, and it’s just so delicious. She’s perfect and hilarious. That Wednesday-Hester relationship is unique; you see a twinkle in both their eyes when they’re together on-screen. I think everyone is going to fall in love with Hester."
According to Good Housekeeping, Joanna Lumley, who plays Heston Frump, has expressed that her experience of playing the character was,
"wonderful",
She further explained,
"I get to wear many, many huge wigs, one on top of the other — and lots of quite constraining clothes, so I love it."
Joanna Lumley is known for the British show Absolutely Fabulous, where she played Patsy Stone. She is also known for her performances in films like The Wolf of Wall Street and Paddington 2. Fans of Lumely are looking forward to seeing what she brings to the show as Wednesday’s Grandmama.
Wednesday Season 2 will further explore Wednesday’s relationships. The story will focus more on her relationships with her family and its secrets, as hinted by Morticia Addams (played by Catherine Zeta Jones) in the Wednesday Season 2 trailer.
Showrunners Michael Gough and Miles Millar have also expressed that Wednesday Season 2 will be darker. According to Good Housekeeping, the showrunners said,
"Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore".
Wednesday Season 2, part one and part two, will come out on 6th August and 3rd September 2025, respectively, only on Netflix.
