As FX’s Shōgun continues to dominate the awards circuit, series co-creator Justin Marks has teased an even better season 2. After sweeping trophies at the Primetime Emmys and the Golden Globes, the historical drama has won the Best Drama Series award at the Critics' Choice Awards.

Marks talked about the series’ future at the event and revealed the team is done with the writing of the second season’s script. Shōgun was initially billed as a limited series but was renewed for two more seasons owing to the unprecedented response from the audience and critics.

Set in 1600s Japan, the show follows two men from starkly different worlds. While Yoshii Toranaga, the lord of Kanto, is cornered by the Council of Regents, a European maritime pilot arrives at the shore, which changes the course of history.

Justin Marks teases Shōgun season 2 will surprise the audience

Justin Marks, who co-created the show with Rachel Kondo, talked about what to expect from Shōgun season 2 in an interview with Deadline during the Critics' Choice Awards. He said the writing team has finished the work on the script, including the season finale:

“We’re coming out of the writers' room now. We’re also done with the 10 episodes and we have our finale now. That’s allowing us to start figuring out how we’re going to shoot this. But we’re very excited about the plan.”

Hinting at an explosive season 2, Marks said the audience is going to be surprised by the events of the very first episode:

“I think the thing to take away, more than anything, is how, I hope people are going to be surprised with some of the big ideas as soon as the first episode of part two. So, we’ll start there and see where it takes us for future stories. But we’re really excited about it, especially for [lead actor Hiroyuki Sanada].”

The release date for Shōgun season 2 has not been revealed yet. Meanwhile, the show continues to earn laurels as it bagged four trophies at the Critics' Choice Awards.

The show won Best Drama Series, Best Actor in a Drama Series for Hiroyuki Sanada, Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for Moeka Hoshi, and Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Tadanobu Asano at the event.
