In the seventh episode of Dexter: Original Sin "The Big Bad Body Problem", we find out a shocking twist about Spencer's abductor. The said kidnapper is none other than Nicky's father himself, Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey). He does this for one particular reason, Nicky's parentage. Aaron is suspicious that he isn't Nicky's real father, Nelson is.

This motivation serves as a rude realization for Dexter who until now believes that all of his opponents, very much like him suffered one bad day. Dexter has been suspicious of Aaron ever since the seventh episode of Dexter: Original Sin, but he decides to act on it in the finale. The actor portraying Dexter in Original Sin recently gave an interview to TVLine in which he spoke about the Spencer twist.

What did Dexter: Original Sin actor Patrick Gibson say about that shocking twist?

Actor Patrick Gibson was interviewed by TVLine's Nick Caruso, in which the former broke down the finale of Dexter: Original Sin. In the same interview, the actor also spoke in detail about his character's flaws. Here's what Gibson said about learning the Aaron Spencer twist:

"Honestly, I did not see it coming. I had my suspicions on other people. On the page and just knowing who was going to play him, I fully was not expecting it and was in complete shock. And that was good because I think for the most part, Dexter’s also in the woods with that. He doesn’t suspect it. It’s right under his nose. It’s also a pretty big betrayal. [Spencer] is somebody who Dexter’s grown up with and I think Dexter’s always had the feeling that he can sense the Dark Passenger in other people pretty quickly."

He continued,

"Like with Nurse Mary, he picks up on it instinctively. Something about Spencer, which I think also speaks to Spencer’s character probably, is that he’s maybe somebody who was corrupted in his morality rather than born with this Dark Passenger, but I think that’s a big lesson for Dexter as well. So yeah, I was shocked. I’m really curious how people respond to it. My mom guessed it was somebody else and it’s been hard to keep quiet when I know who I had strapped to the table."

It makes sense that this version of the serial killer protagonist as we see in Dexter: Original Sin feels betrayed by Aaron. Captain Aaron Spencer is someone who was able to slip Dexter's supposed killer instincts that could identify serial killers. It also sets up how Dexter's own brother Brian Moser could slip by the Bay Harbor Butcher's sharp instincts all the way back in the first season of the original series.
