Breaking Bad continues to make headlines even after the show’s ending back in 2018. The latest news that has brought Breaking Bad back to the discussion is the sale of Walter White’s house and that too at a whopping price of $4m.
Walter’s house in Albuquerque, New Mexico was a key shooting location for Breaking Bad where our anti-hero lived with his family consisting of his wife Skyler and son Wlater Jr. The house witnessed everything, from Walter’s revelation of him having cancer to his turning into a drug lord and how that changed his equation with his family, everything that happened in the show, the house was a part of it.
Now, almost 7 years after the show's end, the original owner Joanne Quintana had decided to sell it off because she mentioned that she's had enough of the fans’ gawking and throwing pizza slices at the roof of the house, something that Walter did in Breaking Bad.
The house had been Joanne’s home since her childhood as her parents purchased it in the 1970s. As she has finally taken the decision to sell off her family home of almost 52 years, let us now explore how the house came to be a part of Breaking Bad shooting locations along with how fans have been reacting to this news.
How did the Breaking Bad house come to being?
Before the house became the Breaking Bad house, it was a simple home, owned by Quintana’s parents. Then one day in 2006, her mother was approached by a film scout who asked if they could shoot a pilot episode there. Her mother agreed because, in Quintana’s words as she spoke to KOB, a local outlet,
“We were, like anybody, it’s a once in a lifetime thing. You got to meet the actors, the actresses, you got to see how they set up the equipment and what it all takes.”
She also mentioned that her mother baked cookies for everyone on the set and barring Bryan Cranston, who had to lose weight since Walter had cancer, everyone else on the set loved her cookies.
However, this feeling of being part of something Hollywood faded after a while as fans of the show started to flock to the house and hampered the peace. Things became so intense that Quintana’s family had to put up fences and install CCTV cameras to keep the fans at bay. Throwing pizza at the house’s roof also became a thing following the episode Walter did the same and that further caused much discomfort and trouble to the owners.
So now, Quintana says,
"This was our family home from 1973, almost 52 years. So we're going to walk away with just our memories. It's time to move on. We're done. There's no reason to fight anymore."
Her decision to sell the family home shows how difficult it has been to deal with the downside of fame, something that has no regard for personal space or people’s safety and comfort.
What price has been quoted for the Breaking Bad house?
Since Quintana has made the tough decision to sell her family home, it is only natural that a hefty price has been quoted to make the most out of the popularity of the house. While a number of online real estate calculators estimated that the house should be priced at $340,000, the house is actually priced at $4M, owing to the Breaking Bad magic that’s associated with it.
Fans of Breaking Bad already know that it’s a ranch-style house that has four bedrooms and since the listing has gone live, ideas of turning the house into a holiday rental or museum have been floating around.
Social Media users have started reacting to the sale of the Breaking Bad house
As expected, social media has been abuzz with different reactions since the news of the Breaking Bad house has gone live. While some users were amused at the high price of the place, some, like @Remixedcat the catgod took a more joking attitude and said,
“Free pizza for life too!!”
Another user, @timjdiesel, who marveled at the price, said,
“I wonder if it’s only worth $4 million because of the branding?”
@DreamStarter_1 mentioned,
“It seems like a rough place to live!”
With fans being so excited about the house, it now remains to be who becomes the owner of it.
Breaking Bad can be streamed on Netflix.
