Beta Film's new distribution agreement will make the mafia-themed crime series Cold Summer roll out worldwide. The U.S. and Canadian audiences will be able to see it on the popular foreign drama channel Walter Presents, thanks to the new deal.
Per Variety, the deal takes place on the eve of the official television debut of the series in the U.K., on Channel 4 from April 13. The show will be available on demand as a box set through Channel 4's digital service, too.
The show starts in the early 1990s when Southern Italy was experiencing significant changes in its criminal and social fabric. The plot combines fact and fiction to explore how minor crime in the coastal city of Bari slowly develops into something much more sinister, namely an active mafia presence.
The narrative centers on Pietro Fenoglio, a principled and determined marshal in the Carabinieri’s Operations Unit. He starts off investigating what seems like a routine murder of a loan shark, but Fenoglio soon grows suspicious that the crime is merely the tip of an ideberg, pointing at a larger, more nefarious underworld activity.
His gut instinct tells him organized crime is stealthily gaining traction in Bari, though his warnings are disregarded by dismissive superiors, particularly the city police chief.

Italian mafia drama Cold Summer gains international momentum
If you're in the mood for exciting crime drama, get ready because Cold Summer is set to land on Channel 4 in a matter of days. The series isn't a regular work-of-fiction crime story. Rather, it is rooted in tumultuous reality.
Fenoglio's investigation also involves the notorious Cosa Nostra violence in Sicily, which resulted in the murder of two noted anti-mafia judges, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. These are actual tragedies that provide a chilling context to the drama, highlighting how dangerously pervasive mafia control had become throughout Italy.
One of the most pivotal moments in Cold Summer occurs when the young son of Nicola Grimaldi, a violent and powerful mafia leader, is abducted and killed. It is an incident that shocks the criminal community.
Vito, a former associate of Grimaldi, is frightened for his life and flees to the police for protection. This provides Fenoglio with an opening, to access the inner workings of the new mafia.
Vito'sd revelation, however, highlights a more sinister reality: Even those who are assigned to serve the law might not be different from the rogues they hunt.
So, don't miss out all the action in the Italian drama series, Cold Summers.
