The series will continue exploring the dystopian world of Gilead, following the experiences of the three characters as they navigate its society.
Plot details of The Testaments explored
The Testaments is a 2019 novel by Margaret Atwood, a sequel to the book covered in The Handmaid's Tale. The novel was written over 15 years after the previous book and has three female protagonists with differing opinions about the totalitarian state of Gilead.
Daisy (Halliday) grew up outside Gilead and is part of a resistance movement. Agnes (Infiniti) has been brought up under the regime's strict social hierarchy. Ann Dowd's Aunt Lydia, a key character in Gilead, will play a huge role in shaping its destiny. The Handmaid's Tale will expand on the issues of the series, giving us an inside look into the workings of the regime and how the dynamics of its power are shifting.
The show will carry similar tone of the original series but with a shifted focus toward these new voices. As The Handmaid's Tale concludes, The Testaments will be a sequel to the complete story with extra information regarding the destiny of Gilead and its people.
The Testaments will be handled by The Handmaid's Tale executive producer, Bruce Miller. The series is set 15 years after the events of the original novel. As much as Hulu has yet to provide a release date, the timeline shows that the series will be out in 2026, following the conclusion of The Handmaid's Tale in 2025.
The final season of The Handmaid's Tale is set to be released on April 8.
