The Sticky, a dark comedy series that premiered on Prime Video on December 6, 2024, will not be getting a second season. As per a report by Deadline, Prime Video has decided to cancel the show after one season.
Starring The Americans and Justified actress, Margo Martindale, in the lead, the series is inspired by a real-life heist that took place in Canada in 2012 and led to the theft of $18 million worth of maple syrup.
Martindale appears as Ruth Landry, a farmer whose land is threatened by the authorities. The show received positive reviews for its eccentric characters and entertaining storyline but failed to top the streaming charts.
Prime Video cancels The Sticky after one season
On February 21, 2025, reports came out that The Sticky is not being renewed for season 2 by Prime Video. The decision comes as a surprise for many as the show has a stellar 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and was received well by the audience.
While Prime Video did not reveal the reason behind the cancellation, the decision might have been taken due to the low viewership of the series. Despite the positive reviews and reception, the series did not reach the popularity of other Prime Video comedies like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
The news comes just a few days after Prime Video cancelled another comedy series after one season. The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, which was released in October 2024, has also not been renewed for a second instalment by the streaming platform.
Created by Brian Donovan and Ed Herro, The Sticky blends elements of heist comedy, dark humour, and crime thriller. The show follows Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer in Canada, whose land is on the verge of being acquired by the government.
To seek revenge, she teams up with a mobster named Mike and a security guard named Remy to steal millions worth of syrup from maple syrup reserves. Meanwhile, her husband is in a coma, which causes further trouble for the woman.
The show is based on the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, a theft that took place from a storage facility in Quebec from 2011 to 2012, during which 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup was stolen from the reserve.
The Sticky stars Margo Martindale as Ruth Landry, along with Guillaume Cyr as Remy Bouchard, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Mike Byrne. The cast also includes Gita Miller as Teddy Green, Mickaël Gouin as Léo Gauthier Jr., Mark O'Brien as Charlie, Guy Nadon as Leonard Gauthier Sr., and Suzanne Clément as Detective Valérie Nadeau.
The first season of The Sticky features six episodes, which are available to stream on Prime Video.
