The Rookie started as a show about a 45-year-old man who moved to Los Angeles to be a police officer. He became an older rookie in this challenging job and had to fight many obvious and non-obvious battles. Now in its seventh season, the show will introduce some new characters. After all, their precinct needs fresh blood for new challenges. With the same thought, two new cops will join the department for training.
Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher will appear in the upcoming season of this ABC show as Miles and Seth, two new rookies. During an interview with TVLine on January 3, 2025, showrunner Alexi Hawley spoke about the new characters, what they will bring to the table, and how they can shake things up in this precinct. Let's find out what he said.
The Rookie Showrunner Alexi Hawley on the New Recruits: Details explored
Deric Augustine and Patrick Keleher, entering The Rookie, will play two significantly different characters. Augustine's Miles was already a police officer in Texas with about two years of experience. Still, he has to enter in Los Angeles precinct as a fresh recruit and start his journey from scratch due to the department regulations. While speaking about this aspect, showrunner Alexi Hawley said:
“I thought it was super interesting to bring on a rookie who isn’t a rookie, although he is a rookie in Los Angeles. What’s always shocking when you dig into policing in the United States is there are thousands of police departments and there is no uniformity to how they do things.”
By bringing Miles from his unique situation, Hawley hopes to navigate his oddly specific challenges. Unlike him, Patrick Keleher's Seth is a far younger rookie. Speaking about his role, Hawley said:
“He’s so young, which is great, so to bring him in — his innocence and his eagerness, but also the sort of incompetence at times, falling down and all that kind of stuff — seemed really fun.”
