This is disheartening news for all The Recruit fans as recently, Colton Dunn, who plays Lester Kitchens, confirmed the show's termination via a post on Threads.
“The Recruit has been cancelled yall. Such a bummer. I’ll share some pics and fun memories on IG but just wanted you to hear it from me. Thanks if you watched. I’m AVAILABLE NOW! Hire me for you tv story!!”
This happened a month after the release of The Recruit season 2. However, no particular reasons have been stated by the makers of the Netflix spy drama. It is speculated to be a result of the smaller audience size, especially concerning the production cost.
Read on to explore the reasons behind this surprising move.
The Recruit Season 3 is canceled a month after the release of its Season 2
The Recruit Season 1 premiered on 16 December 2022 and received a mixed to positive response. Even after its renewal for another season in 2025, the show was unable to gain audiences as per the maker's expectations.
Currently, the show scores 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and 7.4 on IMDB. The Recruits follows Owen, a CIA lawyer who gets caught up in a dangerous web of espionage. Just a few days after he joined the department, he encounters a confidential message from a former CIA asset, Max Meladze, who threatens to expose agency secrets if she is not freed from prison. Owen initiates a journey to investigate the same.
According to reports, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike and the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike, which together lasted for almost 6 months in 2023 and impacted the production of many TV series and films, also interrupted The Recruit's production process.
However, the show peaked at number 2 on Nielsen's streaming chart. This means that The Recruit was one of the most-watched streaming series in the U.S. at the time, even though it ultimately suffered cancellation.
How did the fans react to The Recruit cancellation post?
Some fans compared this cancelation with that of Superstore and Manifest (TV series), which happened in 2021, and the similar disappointment they felt even then. Some simply showed love below the actor's post, saying that they loved the show and his character. For most fans, the news was a huge "Bummer".
The Recruit also features a spectacular cast with Noah Centineo, leading as Owen Hendricks, Past Lives star Teo Yoo, Colton Dunn, Fivel Stewart, Kristian Bruun, Kaylah Zander, and Maddie Hasson, among others.
