Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary recently supported an idea proposed by President-elect Donald Trump on turning Canada into a state in the United States. He cited the potential benefits on tariffs, business, and economics of this change, and Mr. Wonderful seems to agree with him.
In a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Nov 29, Trump suggested that Canada should consider becoming the 51st state of the United States. He, then on Dec 18, 2024, recalled the idea on his social media platform, where he pointed out how this decision can be in the best interests of Canada, in terms of lower taxes and upgraded military protection.
Shark Tank OG investor O'Leary, who is also a Canadian politician, expressed his views on the matter in a live stream on FOX Business.
Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary backs Trump's idea of making Canada the 51st state
After President-elect jokingly presented his idea of turning Canada into one of the states in the US, Canadian politician and Shark Tank expert, Kevin O'Leary was asked about his opinion on the matter and the possibility of the change happening.
O'Leary reveals how many Canadians are interested in the idea and would want more details and backs Trump's idea by calling it an economic union.
"Canadians over the holidays—the last two days—have been talking about this. They want to hear more. There are always a lot of issues, more details, but what this could be is the beginning of an economic union."
He also expressed how he feels about the opportunity.
"I think this is a great idea, and I think the potential is massive, and the opportunity is huge. I think at the end of the day, Canadians and Americans, their DNA is the same in terms of what they believe in… freedom."
Shark Tank investor further discusses how the union can benefit not just Canada but also the United States.
"Think about the power of combining the two economies, erasing the border between Canada and the United States putting all that resource up to the Northern borders where China and Russia are knocking on the door," he says. "So secure that, give a common currency, figure out taxes across the board, get everything trading both ways, create a new almost EU-like passport, I like this idea. At least half of the Canadians are interested."
"The problem is the government's collapsing in Canada right now; nobody wants Trudeau to negotiate this deal. I don't want him doing this for me. So, I'm gonna go to Mar-A-Lago. I'll start the narrative.!"
He said as he raised concerns about Justin Trudeau being in power and how Canadians might not want the union to happen with him in the big chair.
While making a Friday morning appearance on Fox News, Shark Tank's Kevin O'Leary endorsed President-elect Trump's proposal to make Canada the 51st state.
