The Last of Us Season 3 is officially in development as HBO has announced the renewal of the hit post-apocalyptic drama. This news comes at a time when audiences are geared up for the premiere of the show’s second season, which arrives on HBO on April 13, 2025.

The series has turned out to be one of the biggest successes for the network in recent times, hence, its renewal does not come as that big of a surprise. Based on the eponymous video game franchise, The Last of Us is set in a world where a deadly virus is turning humans into zombie-like creatures.

The show has been loved by audiences for its thrilling storyline and stellar performances by the cast, particularly by the leads Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. When the series initially premiered in January 2023, it became the most-watched debut season ever on HBO.

HBO announces The Last Of Us Season 3

HBO announced the renewal of The Last Of Us for a third season via social media handles of its streaming service, Max. The streaming platform shared a motion poster for the next installment and wrote:

“It can’t be for nothing. Season 3 is coming. #TheLastOfUs”

The renewal was expected as showrunners had previously confirmed that the second game from the franchise would be adapted into multiple seasons. Following the announcement, series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann expressed their gratitude for fans' and HBO’s support with official statements.

Mazin said:

“We approached season two with the goal of creating something we could be proud of. The end results have exceeded even our most ambitious goals, thanks to our continued collaboration with HBO and the impeccable work of our unparalleled cast and crew. We look forward to continuing the story of The Last of Us with season three!”

Druckmann stated:

“Much of that success is thanks to my partner in crime, Craig Mazin, our partnership with HBO, and our team at PlayStation Productions. On behalf of everyone at Naughty Dog, our cast, and crew, thank you so much for allowing us this opportunity. We’re thrilled to bring you more of The Last of Us!”

The show tells the story of Joel Miller, a survivalist tasked with protecting a young girl named Ellie and transporting her to the other side of the country amid a virus outbreak. The second season is set to debut on April 13, 2025, and will conclude on May 25, 2025. The new chapter picks up five years after the events of the previous season’s finale.

The show stars Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, along with Rutina Wesley, Young Mazino, Gabriel Luna, Kaitlyn Dever, Isabela Merced, Ariela Barer, Danny Ramirez, and Spencer Lord.
