Bruce Miller's The Handmaid's Tale introduces viewers to a future where the United States suffers a brutal theocratic dictatorship known as Gilead. The TV series, inspired by Margaret Atwood's novel of the same name, shows how gender rules affect women and others in society.
The TV series' unique narrative has been praised by many as it focuses on women being assigned tasks based on their perceived value and highlights oppression, control, and resistance. At the heart of The Handmaid's Tale is Offred, a woman forced to have children for powerful leaders.
Due to pollution and radiation, many cannot bear children, and this is why this woman is assigned the task of giving birth. However, Offred wasn't always like this. The TV series also offers a glimpse into life before Gilead, when the woman had a husband and a lovely daughter.
The TV series has completed five successful seasons and is now heading for the release of its sixth chapter. This news comes from members O.T. Fagbenle (Luke) and Amanda Brugel (Rita), who shared the filming update on social media.
Not only this, but Fagbenle has also shared a few behind-the-scenes goodies for fans eagerly awaiting for Season 6. Continue reading to know more about the show and what's revealed about the upcoming season.
The Handmaid's Tale Season 6 filming has officially wrapped up
If you enjoyed the previous seasons of The Handmaid's Tale, note that the upcoming sixth chapter will serve as the conclusion to the long-running dystopian series. As mentioned above, the production team has officially completed the filming, which means the series finale is nearing its release date.
However, Hulu has yet to announce the release date for The Handmaid's Tale Season 6, and until then, fans can enjoy the pictures shared by the cast. Actor O.T. Fagbenle shared several pictures with co-stars and wrote:
"THATS A WRAP on the final season of Handmaids! It’s coming soon! Any predictions?"
While Yvonne Strahovski also took to her Instagram and wrote:
"And that, Ladies and Gents is a series wrap for Serena Joy. I have so many things to say & so many people to thank... Thank you from the bottom of my heart & through my very soggy tears as I drive away from set for the last time❤️"
Actress Amanda Brugel, who plays a Marthas named Rita in The Handmaid's Tale, also expressed her gratitude through a heartfelt video. Brugel is reminiscing about the time she spent with her co-stars on the set and the bonds she had made.
As for the story in Season 6, the makers have kept it a secret but promise to be full of surprises. During an interview with TVLine, Elisabeth Moss said:
"It’s pretty wild, the final season, honestly. It definitely has final-season energy. It’s big and wild, and goes to many different places, and it is very, very surprising all the way through."
The TV series also features how the social classes in Gilead work, as women are classified by the color of their clothes. If a woman is in blue, it means she's a wife. Meanwhile, women in green are classified as Marthas, who work as housemaids and cooks.
This way, it becomes incredibly difficult for women to express themselves as all of their rights and freedom have been taken away. Now that the series is gearing up for the finale chapter, it would be intriguing to watch them fight the oppression.
