Season 2 of The Diplomat is back, and Netflix has just released a teaser that gives major hints about what happened after the cliffhanger ending in season 1. One of the questions is about what happened to Kate Wyler's husband, Hal, after the massive explosion.

From the teaser, it seems like Hal made it alive. Spotted together walking into this formal event, the couple has had their fair share of ups and downs, and this shot would indicate that they will be part of this new season.

Of course, during The Diplomat Season 2, Kate reflects on her trip and thorny political problems. Yet to be seen is how she juggles between ambassadorship and marriage while untangling international politics.

With everyone having a lot on the line, Netflix dropped the season 2 synopsis:

“A deadly explosion in the heart of London shatters U.S. Ambassador Kate Wyler’s world... As Kate chases the truth, her only real ally is her almost-ex-husband Hal Wyler, very much alive, and very much involved.”

As the U.S. Ambassador to the U.K., Kate Wyler faces some of her biggest hurdles to date, personally and professionally, in season 2. But after uncovering that the attack on a British warship was, in fact, a British Prime Minister-orchestrated event, not one by an enemy state, she begins to question everything.

Showrunner Debora Cahn spoke with Tudum about the tension between the U.S. and U.K. governments:

“The U.S. and the U.K. don’t spy on each other. In fact, they share all their intelligence. So how do you investigate the PM? Who do you trust?”

It will get tougher in The Diplomat Season 2, with Kate going through trust problems and power struggles. The teaser introduces a new character, Vice President Grace Penn. Allison Janney plays this character.

There could be a tussle between Kate and Grace as the VP thinks Kate is after her job. But considering all factors, she's not entirely wrong. Kate thinks she knows what Grace is all about but is in for a shock.

Hal's survival throws a wrench into the marriage with the Wylers. They're on the brink of splitting up the whole first season, and at this point, it's anyone's guess. The teaser promises reconciliation and a little more drama as they put on a united front in public but hints that they still have unresolved issues.

Cahn said to The Hollywood Reporter that season 2 would change how we view their relationship:

“Everything we thought we knew about the Wylers changes, as does everything they think they know about each other.”

Rufus Sewell, aka Hal, shared his thoughts with Tudum on where The Diplomat is headed, saying:

“All I know is that if you resolve it one way or another too quickly, we’re screwed. I like to think there are enough problems to last us [a few seasons].”

Other than Kate and Hal's marriage, audiences will see more high-octane drama that has made The Diplomat popular. Adding Allison Janney as the no-nonsense VP Grace Penn, the political conspiracy thickens. Season 2 will have the same emotional tone everybody loved in season 1.

Mark your calendars: The Diplomat Season 2 streams on Netflix starting October 31, 2024.

If you can't wait for all the political drama, The Diplomat Season 1 is also on Netflix now.
