Claire Danes is slated to play the lead in the upcoming HBO family drama series The Applebaum Curse. Danes will team up with writer and creator Winnie Holzman after 30 years.

Claire Danes and Winnie Holzman team-up

Both Danes and Holzman worked on ABC’s coming-of-age teen drama My So-Called Life, which ran on the network from 1994-1995 with 19 episodes. The show was created by Holzman and produced by Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz.

The story follows Angela Chase, played by Danes, who struggles to adapt to the challenges of being a teenager in a high school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The critically acclaimed show was instrumental in launching Danes. She earned an Emmy nomination and won a Golden Globe Award. The show also starred Wilson Cruz and Jared Leto. The short-lived show is often considered a cult classic.

Danes went on to star in many hit movies such as Romeo+Juliet, The Rainmaker, The Hours, and Stardust. She also collected a few Emmy awards along the way for the portrayal of an autistic woman in the titular role of Temple Grandin in the HBO biopic and for her iconic performance as the CIA agent Carrie Mathison in Showtime’s Homeland.

She was also nominated for an Emmy and Golden Globe award for her portrayal of Rachel Fleishman in FX’s limited series Fleishman Is In Trouble. She was recently in Max’s miniseries Full Circle and The Essex Serpent on Apple TV+. Danes will next be seen in Netflix’s upcoming series The Beast in Me.

Post My So-Called Life, Winnie Holzman worked on several other popular TV series, such as ABC’s Thirtysomething and Showtime's Roadies. She co-wrote the screenplay for Wicked and the upcoming Wicked: For Good. Holzman was recently nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay with Dana Fox for Wicked at Writers Guild Awards. During the awards, Holzman spoke to Variety regarding a possible reboot of My So-Called Life:

‘It’s interesting that you’re asking me that. I am writing something that I’m hoping to do with Claire. It’s not a reboot in the traditional sense, but I think Claire Danes and I back together would be a kind of version of that.’

She further spoke about the new project:

'It’s a completely different story. But we’re hopeful that we’re gonna work together again. I’m writing it now, and it’s hopefully gonna be at HBO, so we’ll see. I have to cross my fingers! You never know what’s gonna happen, but Claire would love to do this with me, so I’m excited.'

While the speculations about The Applebaum Curse are still ongoing, there are no further updates about Danes's possible castmates and the show's release date. Watch this space to get more news on the development.
