Pedro Pascal has recently talked about the emotional intensity of working on The Last of Us, hinting at the richness and tension of the next season. Although he has mentioned great scenes in the past, such as Joel's open-hearted revelation to Tommy during Season 1, the precise nature of the upcoming emotional scenes is currently kept under wraps. But Pascal promised fans that Season 2 would be more boundary-pushing, both narrative-wise and emotionally.

During an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live, Pascal offered a description of an especially intense sequence from The Last of Us just before the eagerly awaited Season 2 premiere. When Jimmy asked him about the emotionally charged scene he shared with O'Hara. Kimmel asked whether everyone aplauded Pascal for the perfect timing of his tear in that scene. Pascal replied,

"It was allergies. I don't know, I must not have blinked, or I was like, Pray, pray that this tear falls out of my eye for this take, something like that."

He also praised Catherine O'Hara, saying that it was emotional seeing her play such a serious role. Pascal said,

"She's the greatest. She really is the greatest. She's one of the greats. And so to get to do something so heavy, that was such a heavy click."

The actor also spoke about the draining emotional and physical experience of shooting this sequence, highlighting how meaningful it was for crafting his character's arc.

Pedro Pascal's emotional investment in The Last of Us season 2

Pedro Pascal himself has frequently remarked on the requirement for The Last of Us to have such extreme emotional investment within its cast. He has also spoken before about how difficult it is for him to perform Joel's inner turmoil, particularly where that makes him access his fears and regrets. His performance throughout Season 1, particularly his stark confession to Tommy in Episode 6, showed the vulnerability of Joel.

Talking about filming new episodes, Pascal said,

"My mindset was grateful to be back and yet, at the same time, this experience, more than any other I've had, is hard for me to separate what the characters are going through and how it makes me feel, in a way that isn't very healthy. And so I kind of feel their pain."

Season 2 of The Last of Us will probably keep these themes going, fleshing out the dynamic between Joel and Ellie. While according to Tom's guide, Pascal has called the next season "heartbreaking" and difficult emotionally, there are no reports of fresh emotional scenes.

Pascal and the producers have also hinted at emotionally charged scenes that will give us insight into Joel's character, ensuring that the new season is as emotionally satisfying as the last.
