The 82nd Golden Globes awarded Shogun and Hacks the best drama television series and best comedy series, respectively. Shogun is a historical drama from FX, while Hacks is a comedy from Max about a complex female comedian who wants to revive her dying career with the help of a young and unemployed writer.
In addition to winning the Best Drama Television Series award, Shogun also won the Best Male and Female Actor awards, making Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai first-time winners.
Shogun’s Tadanobu Asano bagged the Best Supporting Male Actor award, marking his first Globe win and making Shogun the show with four Globes to its credit.
Hacks has two wins, and in addition to the Best Comedy Series award, Jean Smart won the Best Actress in a TV Comedy award, marking her second Globe win.
With Shogun and Hacks making it big on the Golden Globe, let us explore these shows in detail and how the cast and crew associated with them reacted to the wins.
Shogun wins four awards in the Golden Globes 2025
Shogun’s win at the Golden Globes 2025 is even more special because the show did well in the Emmys as well, with 18 wins under their name. The creator of Shogun, Justin Marks, while accepting the award, said,
“Nothing about this show has ever been expected. Truly, it was made on the backs of thousands of yesses that we received over the years from our East-meets-West cast and crew, an extraordinary cast standing right here. To our writer and our directors and our partners at Disney Television, FX and Hulu, all of you guys said yes so many times over the years to a show that on paper you should, quite frankly, have never said yes to. It’s a miracle that everyone still have their jobs.”
Based on the novel of the same name by James Clavell, Shogun competed against high-voltage shows like The Day of the Jackal, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, The Diplomat, Slow Horses, and Squid Game and emerged victorious.
Hacks wins two awards in the Golden Globes 2025
The 82nd Golden Globes proved to be a significant milestone for Hacks, as it reclaimed the Best Comedy/Musical Series award after a previous loss. This feat was previously achieved only by All in the Family.
Jean Smart, the protagonist of Hacks, also won Best Actress in a TV Comedy or Musical, which marked her second Golden Globe win. In her acceptance speech, Smart said,
“I never thought I’d be so happy to be called a hack.”
She also profusely thanked Hannah Einbinder, her co-star, and further added:
“Without Ava, there would be no Deborah.”
Smart also thanked HBO Max, who produced Hacks. The show had to compete with big names like Abbott Elementary, Nobody Wants This, The Bear, The Gentlemen, and Only Murders in the Building to secure its win.
Shogun and Hacks can be streamed on Hulu and Max, respectively.
