There were great moments during the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. Some of its winners in huge categories came as unexpected statements of surprise. With everyone believing FX's The Bear would dominate after its January win, Shōgun and Hacks won Best Drama and Best Comedy awards.
FX's sprawling 17th-century Japan drama Shōgun stunned viewers by sweeping the Best Drama prize, as well as individual acting awards for its leads Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.
Meanwhile, the comedy series Hacks took the year's top honor, ending the reign of The Bear. But the latter did win three acting Emmys, one of them for Jeremy Allen White for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
Baby Reindeer secured 4 wins while The Bear also won 4 Emmys at this year's Primetime Emmy Awards.
Shōgun's record-breaking wins at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards
Shōgun swept the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. It took home 18 wins out of 25 nominations at both the Creative Arts and Primetime ceremonies. Best Drama wasn't the only prize Shogun took home. It scored honors for Hiroyuki Sanada, as Best Actor, and Anna Sawai as Best Actress. They were both first-time nominees.
Fredrick E.O. Toye took the Best Directing award for the series. Paul Tassi from Forbes mentioned that although Shōgun expected to do well, it blew past expectations and beat the record Game of Thrones established for 12 wins.
Sanada, who played the role of a political mastermind in Shōgun, gave a heartfelt speech when accepting an award. He dedicated it to the fans and creators of the show. Anna Sawai, with the key part in the first season, proved to be a fan favorite and showed how much viewers love her.
"Her loss would have caused a riot," joked Tassi.
The Bear and Baby Reindeer shine at 76th Primetime Emmy Awards despite surprises
Even though Shōgun had a great night at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, The Bear walked out with 4 wins. Jeremy Allen White won his second consecutive Emmy for his role as Chef Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto. He's a troubled genius chef who runs a Chicago sandwich shop and transforms it into a fine dining spot.
During his acceptance speech at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, White said:
"This show has changed my life and instilled a faith that change is possible."
Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy was again won by Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who plays Carmy's cousin Richie. Liza Colón-Zayas picked up her third Emmy for Best Supporting Actress. Hacks took home Best Comedy, surpassing The Bear.
Playing the droll comedian Deborah Vance, Jean Smart won her third Emmy and earned a standing ovation. Netflix's Baby Reindeer—about an eerie tale on obsession and stalking—won Best Limited Series at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards.
It also took home awards for Best Lead Actor with Richard Gadd, Best Writing, and Best Supporting Actress with Jessica Gunning.
