Yellowjackets Season 3 premiered on Paramount+ with Showtime on February 14, 2025. The two-episode premiere ended on a surprising note as Shauna and Melissa kissed each other in the woods in the 1990s timeline.
Sophie Nélisse, who plays teenager Shauna in the show, talked about how the incident impacts her character’s relationship with Melissa. In an interview with Deadline, Nélisse said Shauna really can not have romantic feelings for Melissa or anybody else as she does not love herself:
“I think she has no love for herself and no empathy for herself. And so, you can’t love other people until you love yourself, and so I don’t think she’ll be able to give Melissa what she wants in return.”

At the end of Yellowjackets Season 3 episode 2, Melissa goes after Shauna in the woods. However, as soon as she reaches her, Shauna draws a knife and places it on Melissa’s neck. Surprisingly, Melissa does not get scared and instead, kisses Shauna. The latter then kisses her back.
Talking about the changing equation between the two characters, Sophie Nélisse said she believes even Shauna does not understand the dynamics as she is unsure about what she wants:
“It’s a very interesting dynamic, which I don’t even think that Shauna truly understands herself. I don’t think she knows what she wants."
The actress added Melissa brings out a side of Shauna that no one else understands:
“I think she’s sort of at a crossroads where what she needs deep down is to feel loved and for someone to just hold her and tell her that it wasn’t her fault, and I think Melissa kind of brings that because she sees her for who she really is and appreciates her no matter what, and actually highlights those, those darker sides.”
However, as Shauna does not really love anyone, she might just see Melissa as another person to play with. Nélisse said:
“I think, on the contrary, she’ll just see her as another pawn on her chessboard to play with.”
Sophie Nélisse has been a part of Yellowjackets since its inception, while Jenna Burgess joined the show as Melissa in Season 2. The third installment now continues the story of the soccer team girls, whose past in the wilderness keeps haunting them in the present.
