With its second season, Severance has opened the door to a uniquely relatable cultural phenomenon, i.e., that of having a passionate hatred toward one's job. While the oppresive Lumon management sucks the life out of Mark and the other's on Severance, the Apple TV+ sheds ample light on exhausting workplaces like no other.

Several fans of Severance have taken to the social media platform Reddit and in a sub-reddit titled r/television have expressed their wholesome love for the job-hating aspect of Severance.

Here's everything that we know.

Fans celebrate Severance for it's exposure of toxic workplaces

In the modern world, the incidence of toxic workplaces is constantly on the rise. With inhuman working hours and sub-human pay structures, a constant threat of termination, and abysmally low levels of job security, the modern workspace is often the object of hatred. Several fans of Severance recently expressed themselves in the same vein on Reddit.

Ben Stiller speaks about the similarities between Lumon and the entertainment industry

Severance creator Ben Stiller spoke in an exclusive interview with The New York Times earlier this year before the release of the Apple TV+ show's sophomore season. In the interview, Stiller highlighted the similarities between Lumon and the modern-day entertainment industry when he remarked:

"At a certain point there’s always somebody making a decision who is not making it to your face or you don’t even know who that person is. Why a decision is made is never explained to the creative person or, if it is, it’s usually not the truth. It’s a cliché in Hollywood, but it’s kind of true that everybody will say yes and it doesn’t mean yes. It means no or let me think about it — more than ever, honestly."

It can be said that several modern workplaces, including the entertainment industry today, often have a dehumanizing effect on their employees. The Hollywood strikes in the recent past surfaced as a form of resistance against the high incidence of low wages and inhuman working conditions.

The very idea of labouring away for a job that is seemingly meaningless and brings no fulfillment is an alarming reality in the present, making Mark and his colleagues seem oddly relatable. This is perhaps one of the many reasons behind the show's resounding success.

Severance is exclusively available on Apple TV+.
