"Same universe": True Detective creator Issa López drops major Season 5 updates; HBO head reveals filming location

The hit Emmy award-winning series True Detective is all set to return to HBO with season 5. Writer and showrunner Issa Lopez will also be back the next season.

Per New York Post, Issa López said,

'It's very important for me, and I worked a lot in (True Detective) Night Country about this, to create the feeling that this is the same universe.'

The casting is going through its due process and filming for the show is expected to commence later this year. The anthology series has won several awards for its brilliant performances and gripping storyline.

Issa Lopez confirmed that season 5 will take place in the same universe as the first four installments of the show. She said,

‘Well, what I can say is there’s going to be- my God! - there’s going to be some important connections between everything that happens in Ennis, Alaska, and the characters in Ennis, Alaska, and what happens in the new (season). That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything.’

She continued,

‘There’s something bigger than us and darker than what we can imagine behind the scenes. And that is happening in this (next) season too. And it’s connected to the original idea of 'True Detective', of this dark reality behind the scenes of what we think is our reality.’

About the expectations surrounding the show, HBO’s Head of Drama Series and Film, Francesca Orsi told Deadline,

‘I’m really excited about it. We have a small writers room going with Issa. She’s excited. We just gave notes on the first two episodes, the entire season. Honestly, I can’t wait for this to go. It’s all about casting and getting this ready.’

She also revealed,

‘It’s set in New York, in Jamaica Bay.’

About True Detective:

True Detective is an HBO anthology crime drama series created by Nic Pizzolatto. Every season of the show has a new cast with different characters and locations. Season one, which was set in Louisiana, saw Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in pursuit of a serial killer.

Season two focussed on three detectives investigating the murder of a corrupt politician in California, with an ensemble cast of Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch.
