As Reacher Season 3 streams, Olivier Ritchers, who plays Paul van Hoven, has compared his experience acting on the show to acting in the Marvel universe. Before Reacher, fans had also seen him as Ursa in Marvel's Black Widow (2021). However, according to Ritchers, acting in a Marvel movie is quite different from acting in an Amazon Prime action-crime show.
In an interview with Owen Danoff published on Sunday by Screenrant, the actor said,
''Sometimes throwing the lines away. I've been on Marvel, and that's maybe a little bit more acting in an overexaggerated way because you can. Reacher is more like you and me are speaking now. So, sometimes he felt like, “No, let's say that a bit more like it’s [throwaway],” or we changed some words.''
Reacher 3 Star Explains Why Acting on the Show is different from his experience in the MCU
Marvel films revolve around superhuman powers, action sequences, and larger-than-life characters. They are popular for their CGI effects and dramatic stunts. Reacher, on the other hand, portrays the lives of real human beings, their problems, and realistic fight sequences. While both feature strong and determined heroes, their approaches to storytelling and performance are fundamentally different. While Marvel, as a superhero franchise, relies on amplification of emotions in character-portrayal, Reacher requires more subtlety in thought and depiction.
Ritcher explains,
But also other simple stuff. Like, at some point a body is falling out of a car in front of me and my line is very simple–”What the f***?” And you can think, like, “Well, what's going to go wrong with that?” But I said it and Alan came up to me, and he explained me that if you say that, you should say that to yourself–you don't say that out loud. Those small things just make the line, even if it's three words. It's so important, the small stuff.
It is essential for a show like Reacher to look realistic. As per Ritchers' experience on Reacher Season 3, it needs to be much more detailed than one thinks.
Marvel films are popular because they feed into one's fantasy. They feature intergalactic travels, state-of-the-art gadgets, and powers beyond imagination. Fans flock to the theaters to watch superheroes fight supervillains, often with a dose of much-appreciated humor.
However, Reacher is set in the real world, where physical combat is the only way to fight one's enemies. This means acting and dialogue must be crafted meticulously to maintain authenticity. While humour is not done away with completely, it is not what drives the story. What does is the script, the dialogue-delivery, and its well-developed characters.
New episodes of Reacher Season 3 premiere on Amazon Prime Video every Thursday. You can also stream the two seasons and first eight episodes of Reacher Season 3 on Amazon Prime Video.
