The Dexter universe is soon going to get bigger and better with the release of Dexter: Resurrection. The mystery crime drama marks the fourth series in the franchise and brings back Michael C. Hall as the titular vigilante who preys on dangerous killers.
The original series lasted for eight seasons, while its sequel, Dexter: New Blood, was a miniseries featuring only one season. The franchise now seems to be going back to its roots, as the creators are planning to continue Dexter: Resurrection for several years.
Even before the Showtime series’ premiere, showrunner Clyde Phillips and lead actor Michael C. Hall revealed that they want to run the show for multiple seasons. Phillips said in an interview with Vanity Fair:
“We’ve got the strongest franchise in Showtime’s history, and we plan to do this for years.”
Dexter: Resurrection is being envisioned to continue for several years
During the same conversation, Michael C. Hall echoed Phillips’ opinion and said Dexter: Resurrection will not be a miniseries like New Blood. Instead, they will keep exploring the character for years to come:
“Years with an 's.' The thinking is not to come back for a sort of self-contained one-off again, but leave it open to further exploration. The intention, and hope, is that the story will continue beyond this.... He’s a much more human, flesh-and-blood version of that horror trope of someone who just refuses to go down.”
The show is a direct sequel to New Blood, picking up just a few weeks after the miniseries’ events. It brings Dexter Morgan to New York City, where he tries to track down his son, Harrison Morgan. Meanwhile, Captain Angel Batista is on a mission to find them both.
The series marks the return of several actors from the original show. Apart from Michael C. Hall, James Remar is reprising his role as Harry Morgan, Jack Alcott returns as Harrison Morgan, and David Zayas once again appears as Angel Batista.
The rest of the cast includes Uma Thurman as Charley, Ntare Mwine as Blessing Kamara, Dominic Fumusa as Detective Melvin Oliva, Neil Patrick Harris as Lowell, Peter Dinklage as Leon Prater, Kadia Saraf as Detective Claudette Wallace, and Emilia Suárez as Elsa Rivera.
Dexter has proven to be one of the most successful projects for Showtime. The ever-expanding universe recently had another spin-off, a prequel titled Dexter: Original Sin, which has also been well received by fans and has already been renewed for a second season.
Dexter: Resurrection will premiere on Paramount+ with Showtime in the summer of 2025.
