It's a good time for Batman fans as in a few weeks they will be able to revisit Matt Reeves’ Batman universe. Colin Farrel will be reprising his role as the villainous Penguin. However, the sad part is that Robert Pattinson will not be featured in the series as Batman.

The HBO series, Penguin, is a spin-off of the 2022 movie The Batman, and it completely focuses on Penguin’s character and his rise in the criminal world of Gotham following the incidents that took place in The Batman.

Reeves has assured the fans that though Batman will not be there in the show, they will not be missing out on anything. He further added that the spin-off is only an expansion of what fundamentally has always been present in the story. The story will not be devoid of the look and feel of Batman's world.

Reeves also said:

You’re going down a different alley. So the spectre of Batman is there. The spectre of the Riddler is there. The spectre of everything that happens in the last movie is there. It informs it. And it’s exactly where we begin.

Lauren LeFranc talks about the show

In an interview with SFX Lauren LeFranc mentioned that though he understands people's desire to see Batman in the show or to think that otherwise it would not have the same punch, that is not necessarily true.

He further added that to him, not having Batman on the show adds a different dimension:

Matt’s films are through the lens of the Batman, so you’re high up, looking down on the city. It’s a different perspective. With Oz, you’re in the city streets, you’re in the grit and the muck and the grime. He’s looking up, wanting to claw his way to the top.

Expansion of the Batman universe

Matt Reeves and Dylan Clark have planned on expanding the Batman universe. Beginning with Penguin, they have plans to work on more films and spin-offs. Batman 2 is already in the pipeline, all set to release on October 2, 2026. Robert Pattison will be reprising his role as Batman which has been confirmed.
