Colin Farrell won the Screen Actors Guild Award 2025 for his performance in The Penguin in the category of Outstanding Male Actor in a Miniseries or Television Movie. The critically acclaimed The Batman spin-off series premiered on Max in September 2024.

Since The Penguin Season 1's conclusion, fans are eagerly waiting for a second season, but Farrell seems in 'no rush' to reprise his role, as he recently discussed in an interview with Variety:

“We all left it in the ring in those eight hours. I would hate to, just because of a quote-unquote success, have to go again and for it to be a diluted version of what people seem to feel it is, majoritively.''

He added:

''So I’m in no rush. I have no deep desire to do it. … Sure, if they think of something that works in conjunction as a parallel to Matt Reeves’ cinematic universe and it’s a good idea, I’m open it. But it’s not something concerning me.”

More on Farrell's views on his character in our story.

Farrell opens up on his interest in The Penguin Season 2

There is no doubt that playing Gotham City's most notorious villain has brought immense fame and praise for Farrell, who underwent a huge physical transformation for his role and had to spend hours in the makeup chair to get into his character.

He even admitted the difficulties of getting into his character in an interview, which seems to be why he is in no rush for The Penguin Season 2. But he did discuss the success that the character brought for him (via Variety):

“If you would have told that six-, seven- or eight-, nine-year-old, ‘You’re going to play that character someday...It’s just madness. So these moments are beautiful. I’m very grateful for them. And this show has been extraordinarily thrilling.”

While The Penguin was supposed to be a one-season miniseries to bridge the gap before Matt Reeves' upcoming The Batman sequel, the makers could consider another season, as told by DC Studios co-chiefs Peter Safran and James Gunn (via Variety):

“We don’t know. … There are a lot of moving pieces — probably most important Colin himself.”

The spin-off series takes place right after the events of The Batman, which witnessed the death of crime boss Carmine Falcone. Oz sees this as an opportunity to move up the ladder and fill the power vacuum left in Gotham.

Farrell is also set to reprise his character in The Batman sequel.
