CBS has given the green light to a brand new CIA drama starring Tom Ellis (Netflix's Lucifer), set in the FBI franchise. The show reportedly has two major CBI agents as lead roles, for one of which Ellis has been cast, as per Variety. It was reported back in January that this series was in the works and is now set to premiere in the 2025-26 broadcast season.
The characters of this upcoming spin-off were rumoured to be introduced in an FBI episode and then return with their own show, but it isn't clear if that is still the case.
Here's everything we know about this FBI spin-off focused on CIA agents.
CBS's new FBI spin-off starring Tom Ellis is greenlit

CBS is officially moving forward with a brand new FBI spin-off, titled CIA (for now). Netflix's Lucifer star Tom Ellis has been cast in one of the lead roles for the show.
The official logline of the upcoming spin-off reads:
"'CIA' is a one hour crime drama centered on two unlikely partners – a fast-talking, rule-breaking loose cannon CIA case officer (Ellis), and a by-the-book, seasoned and smart FBI agent who believes in the rule of law. When this odd couple are assigned to work out of CIA’s New York Station, they must learn to work together to investigate cases and criminals posing threats on U.S. soil, finding that their differences may actually be their strength."
Even though Tom Ellis has been cast as one of the leads of the show, casting for the other lead, as well as the rest of the ensemble, is still underway. Ellis was seen in Netflix's Lucifer and will be appearing alongside Sterling K. Brown in Hulu's Washington Black, an adaptation of Esi Edugyan's novel of the same name.
Dick Wolf and David Hudgins are the writers and executive producers on the new show with Hudgins as showrunner. David Chasteen, Nicole Perlman, and Peter Jankowski, representing Wolf Entertainment, will also join as executive producers. News of the third FBI spin-off comes after two other spin-offs, FBI: Most Wanted (showrunner David Hudgins) and FBI: International, were canceled by CBS in March, only two months ago.
Currently, it isn't clear if the characters of the upcoming show will be planted in an FBI episode, as was reported earlier, or be seen directly in a brand-new, fresh show, as per the latest reports.
CBS's FBI is set to release Season 7 Episode 19 on Tuesday, March 22, in a few hours. This is the first season of the three seasons that CBS renewed FBI for in 2024.
