Netflix to end period drama The Empress with a third and final season

If you've been waiting for an update on Season 3 of The Empress (also known as Die Kaiserin) on Netflix, the show has been finally renewed. However, the third chapter will conclude the historical drama.

The Empress debuted on the streaming platform in 2022 and immediately became a global hit. The series centers on Empress Elisabeth of Austria, who constantly tries to fulfill her responsibilities as a mother, wife, and an empress for her people.

Netflix confirms The Empress Season 3 to be the last

Netflix has recently confirmed that The Empress Season 3 will arrive soon, and will be the last chapter of the historical drama. While the release date hasn't been announced, the final season is expected to continue from where Season 2 ended.

The death of her first child in Season 2 left Elisabeth broken, and she returned to her mother's house. After being months apart from Franz and their second daughter, Elisabeth resumes her responsibilities and decides to stand by her husband as the empire needs them.

While the viewership in Season 2 dropped slightly, it stayed on the global Netflix weekly Top 10 charts for more than two weeks. As shared by Netflix, the streamer's Vice President Content DACH, Katja Hofem, said:

"The audience has followed Empress Elisabeth's life through happy, exciting, and dramatic times in the last two seasons."

Hofem expressed excitement about the upcoming Season 3 and is hopeful about its reception. Following the renewal of The Empress, showrunner Katharina Eyssen said:

"Our aim has always been to create a series on an international level, and that, of course, continues to be our aim for the third season!"
