Paramount+'s Landman has been praised for its depiction of life on oilfields; however, a section of the audience has been criticizing the show for hypersexualizing its leading female characters, such as Tommy's daughter, Ainsley Norris, and her mother, Angela Norris.
In a number of scenes, Ainsley, who is 17-year-old in the show, is seen running around in a bikini and having awkward conversations with her father about how she gets intimate with her boyfriend.
The scenes sparked backlash from viewers, who called out series co-creator Taylor Sheridan for not adding depth to female characters and objectifying them in Landman.
Actress Michelle Randolph, who plays Ainsley, has addressed the controversies surrounding her character in an interview. She said when someone is as comfortable in their sexuality as Ainsley, it should be celebrated instead of being criticized.
Michelle Randolph defends Ainsley’s sexualized portrayal in Landman
Michelle Randolph talked about the controversies in an interview with People Magazine and stated she believes the audience should celebrate Ainsley’s character for being comfortable with who she is:
“I think being comfortable in your sexuality is something to be celebrated. If that's what you feel as a human [and] aligns with who you are, then be authentically yourself. And that's what she's doing.”
Randolph added that Ainsley would probably change and think more about the world’s norms when she grows up, but at the age of 17, this is what she likes to do as she has been raised to live life on her terms:
“Though she is 17, so I think as she gets older, she'll put up more boundaries and understand the way the world works more. But as far as she's concerned, right now, this is the way she's been raised and she's going to figure out if she thinks that's right or wrong or she wants to change it.”
Michelle Randolph reacts to the audience’s backlash to her character
Talking about the controversial scene where Ainsley shares her bedroom details with her dad, Michelle Randolph revealed she had auditioned for Landman by acting out the same sequence. While it took her some time to understand the character, Ainsley's antics stopped surprising her once she did.
Randolph further said when the audience started criticizing the character and her scenes, she wondered what was the ‘big deal’ about it. The 27-year-old actress added she is proud of the show and the work she has done:
“I'm so proud of the show that we made, and so I just didn't let myself have a perspective on what the audience thought. I did my job when I was filming and then I closed the door and we put it out there, and I'm excited to hopefully continue the character and that's all I can do.”
Also starring Billy Bob Thornton, Ali Larter, Jacob Lofland, Paulina Chavez, and Kayla Wallace, Landman revolves around an oilfield worker and his family in West Texas, and billionaires who try to milk the oil boon for their benefit.
