Kevin Conroy, known for lending his voice to Batman, will make an appearance in the Netflix anime, Devil May Cry after he passing away. This news was publicized when a trailer was dropped, verifying that Conroy recorded his lines before passing away in November 2022.

With recent and emerging concerns related to AI, producer Adi Shankar explained that no AI was used in generating the voice of Conroy. His role in the anime marks good fortune for his fans to experience his voice and relive his presence on screen.

Kevin Conroy’s final role in Devil May Cry

The Devil May Cry is an adaptation of the game, Capcom, which is again loosely based on The Devine Comedy by Dante Alighieri. This anime series brings Conroy as VP Baines, a newly introduced character whose voice can be heard in the trailer’s opening sequences. Adi Shankar, known for his work on Dredd, labeled Conroy’s performance as being “amazingly nuanced.”

Johnny Yong Bosch, who voices Dante in the amine and has also played Nero in the games, talked about his experience while working on the same project with Conroy. He says:

“It was an honor to work alongside Kevin Conroy for the upcoming DMC series. A true legend. Batman: The Animated Series redefined cartoons for me. For those wondering, our recording sessions took place a few years ago—animation takes quite some time to complete.”

While Conroy is known for his Batman voice in animation and the Arkham games, DMC gives his fans a chance to hear him one last time.

What to expect from Netflix’s Devil May Cry?

The anime follows the protagonist Dante, a half-human and half-demon demon, and a hunter. He is seen fighting again menacing forces waiting to bring forth ultimate chaos. The official Netflix synopsis reads:

“When a mysterious villain threatens to open the gates of Hell, a devilishly handsome demon hunter could be the world's best hope for salvation.”

Adi Shankar, the producer of Devil May Cry brings his experience from The Guardians of Justice and Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon. The animation in the series is helmed by South Korea’s Studio Mir, widely known for works on The Legend of Korra and X-Men ‘97.

Conroy’s role in the Netflix anime series follows his last ever voiceover as Batman in Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 3, released in 2024.

As the film industry copes with the usage of AI in various fields, DMC maintains Conroy’s legacy with realism. His voice-over, recorded before his death, adds an emotional weight to the awaited anime adaptation.

Devil May Cry premieres on April 3, 2025, only on Netflix.
