The Oscars just gave Kieran Culkin the ultimate thumbs-up! And honestly, it was about time. The Succession star snagged the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his stellar performance in A Real Pain.
If you’ve been following the award season, you probably saw this one coming. He had already swept up a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, and a Screen Actors Guild award. Safe to say that Kieran Culkin has been on fire!
Here's what his character was in the film and also all about his acceptance speech.
Kieran Culkin wins the Oscar for Best Actor in a Supporting Role
If you’ve ever seen Kieran Culkin on stage, you know the man doesn’t do boring.
In his Oscar acceptance speech, he thanked Robert Downey Jr. for presenting him with the award. Then he gave a shoutout to his Succession co-star. And oh, he staggered a little when he dropped the F-bomb on live TV.
Keiran Culkin thanked his agent, saying:
“I have no idea how I got here, I’ve just been acting my whole life. It’s just been part of what I do. I felt like this was never my trajectory. But however I got here, I know that Emily Gerson Saines, my manager of 30 years, it’s because of you, thank you for being there. I lean on you for everything, so, please don’t go anywhere. I’d be completely lost without you. I love you."
He gave a sweet and funny tribute to his mom and stepdad:
"I should thank my mom and Steve for trying to raise me. You’re really good people. You gave it your best shot. I love you, mom.
And just when we thought the speech was over, he brought up that deal he made with his wife, Jazz Charton. Remember when he won an Emmy and joked that Jazz promised him a third child if he took home the trophy? Well, turns out they made another bet:
"After the show we’re walking through a parking lot, she’s holding the Emmy, she goes, ‘Oh, god, I did say that. I guess I owe you a third kid.’ I turned to her, I said, ‘Really, I want four. And she turned to me, I swear to god this happened, she said, ‘I will give you four when you win an Oscar.’ I held my hand out, she shook it and I have not brought it up once until just now.”
A Real Pain cemented his place in his fans' hearts. The film gave him the perfect mix of comedy and drama, and he ran with it. Critics were all over it too.
This Jesse Eisenberg-directed comedy drama sees Kieran Culkin as Benji. He is the troubled cousin of the character David. The two set out on a deeply personal tour of their Jewish heritage in Poland. And Kieran? He steals every scene.
Culkin finished his speech saying:
“Let’s get cracking on those kids, what do you say? I love you.”
Kieran Culkin is no longer just that guy from Succession. He’s an Oscar winner now. And we can’t wait to see what he does next.
